Gemstone of the Month - Pearl!
A pearl is the only organic gemstone grown inside a living creature. The ancient Greeks believed pearls were the tears of gods, mermaids or angels. Because natural pearls were so rare, they became the reserve of royalty and the higher echelons of society. Many portraits of Queen Elizabeth 1st show her festooned with pearls. This changed in 1893 when Kokichi Mikimoto successfully created the first cultured pearls. Over the years, modern methods of growing pearls have made them readily accessible, and affordable, to many. Mikimoto pearls can still be purchased today and are highly desirable. Modern charts offer both Alexandrite and Moonstone as alternate choices of birthstone. Both of these have a fascinating history of discovery.
