Dear PMW news reader,
Significant times of change are upon us here, as with sadness, the Precious Metals Workshop will close permanently at the of the end of this year.
Why? - Over the last three years (whist getting civil-partnered and becoming a father) I have also retrained and recently become qualified as a counsellor, now setting up a private practice for my new venture in supporting mental health. As I trained over the past years, the PMW has been run by Mands and Eve, who have done an excellent job and made it their own. So, whilst the PMW ends, a new version will open with classes and bench space still on offer. More about this will follow in the coming months.
When I started the PMW in 2010, it was having identified the difficulties for jewellers starting out. Most had no access to tools and equipment or bench space. This had been my experience when I left education and I wanted to help bridge that gap. We started to run business courses for jewellers and have succeeded in assisting many people get going, most of whom are still making and highly reputable professional jewellers. This is something that I am incredibly proud of.
In 2011 I came up with the crazy idea of RReady, steady, Jeweland for three years it ran, raising money for eleven different charities in that time whilst showcasing up and coming new talent and established jewellers. It was an excellent time.
Some years later I had an even crazier idea and we ran GGoldflair raising awareness around exploitation in the precious metals and gemstone supply chains, encouraged change in the industry and gave money back to artisanal mining communities. The event was another great success and people still talk to me about it some 8 years later.
Both of these events were significant milestones in the life of the PMW and have many fond memories associated with them for many people. They were also both supported and sponsored by Edinburgh’s prestigious HHamilton & Inches to whom I also remain very grateful.
Creating and running the PMW has been a joy and a privilege and I am grateful to everyone who has been a part of this journey. Many of you reading this will have been in our Workshops at some point and I wanted to thank you in particular for being a part of something that has been so very special to me. I couldn’t have done it without you.
My thanks to you and my very best wishes,
Ian Nicholson-Kapasi
