Introducing our second Winter Resident, Sian Evans.

Having first shown Sian’s work at ætla during one of our Edinburgh Festival Fringe exhibitions a few years ago, we’re delighted to welcome her back!

An award-winning British jeweller and goldsmith, Sian has been an influential figure in contemporary jewellery for four decades. A former Senior Lecturer at Central Saint Martins, her work is held in the permanent collection of the V&A and has been exhibited at Sotheby’s.

Her practice draws on archaeology and ancient making techniques. For this residency, we’ve selected pieces featuring Scottish agates and jasper, sourced from the Scottish landscape and hand-carved by Sian herself. Each stone has its own distinctive character, giving the work a strong connection to Scotland.

Terrane in the Financial Times this month ✨

The FT explores the fascination with landscape agates, including Alice Cicolini’s extraordinary hand-carved ebony and agate cuffs which we exhibited at ætla as part of Terrane during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August. Curated by Kate Matthams, Terrane explored the relationship between jewellery and landscape. It’s so wonderful to see Alice’s work and some of the ideas behind the exhibition picked up again in this piece!

Introducing our first Winter Resident, Eliz Fan

Our Residencies are a chance to introduce new voices in contemporary jewellery, and we’re very pleased to welcome Eliz to ætla at such an exciting early point in her career.

A recent Royal College of Art graduate, Eliz is a Taiwanese artist and fine jeweller whose work has a distinctly sculptural quality. Each piece feels like an object in its own right, with irregular forms and tactile surfaces giving the work an almost unearthed quality.

Ellis Mhairi Cameron for Terrane at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2026

“Born and raised in the Highlands of Scotland, Ellis Mhairi Cameron honours her ancestral heritage through jewellery, shaped by objects found on her family farmland. The rugged landscape, between the mountains and the sea, sparked a fascination with imperfection and an exploration of the ways in which her surroundings are woven into her identity. After studying jewellery at Glasgow School of Art, she moved to London for a Masters in Jewellery Design at Central Saint Martins and eventually launched her brand in 2018. She now works out of a studio in London, with her team.

Ellis works in recycled 14kt gold and a broad palette of responsibly sourced diamonds. Inspired by artefacts unearthed on her family’s land, her jewels are characterised by rich, organic texture, as they interpret details of a coin, a brooch, an apothecary pot or other found objects. The kilt pins selected for Terrane are like gemstone-encrusted relics of Iron Age Scotland, heavy with personal and cultural identity. Natural diamonds wink out from hillocks and plains of gold, just as the original items emerged from the earth.” – by Terrane curator Kate Matthams Spencer

Melanie Georgacopoulos for Terrane at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2026

“The Greek designer Melanie Georgacopoulos has built her creative practice around the treasures of the sea, providing a fresh, contemporary interpretation of pearls and mother of pearl. She graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2007 and spent time working for international brands, before launching her own house in 2010. Since 2013, she has collaborated with the Japanese pearl jewellery specialist Tasaki on the M/G Tasaki line, further pushing design boundaries with pearls. Her ongoing focus is to explore the intriguing nature of her chosen materials, through structured, timeless aesthetics.

For Terrane, she has selected pieces that play with our perceptions of natural materials; trompe l’oeil brooches and cufflinks skilfully made to look like faceted stones, and inlay jewellery in rich, peacock colours that throw out any remaining notions of your grandmother’s pearls. Her materials are ethically sourced via a dealer in Copenhagen, one of few to offer full traceable pearls, to create pieces that carry with them the topography of the sea.” – by Terrane curator Kate Matthams Spencer

Nada Ghazal for Terrane at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2026

“A former advertising executive, Nada Ghazal started her brand in her home country of Lebanon in 2003. An established designer with global reach, she views jewellery as an expression of individuality and is inspired by personal themes relating to her own origins and culture, made universal. Her atelier and store in Beirut weathered many storms before she moved her business to London in 2025, and opened a beautifully designed flagship.

Nada’s home city of Beirut is imprinted into the jewels we have chosen for the show. Her signature brushed gold rings and bangles are scattered with tsavorites and sapphires in the colours of the bougainvillea that grows all over the city, frosted with wintery white diamonds, or a multicoloured sapphire sunset, honouring her identity and the history of her beloved city.”

Inesa Kovalova for Terrane at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2026

“Raised in Ukraine and now based in the Netherlands, Inesa Kovalova studied design in Italy and Central Saint Martins, London. She began her career as an architect before opting to work on a smaller scale. Today, she bring, geometry and precision to her jewellery, with constant consideration for how it feels on the body.

For Terrane, she has selected The Carré ring, which plays with light, shadow and volume in smooth palladium gold and winking gems. The Links earrings are emblematic of her sculptural style, showcasing the interplay between pearls, diamonds and metal. Her most striking piece is Memoir, a pebble-shaped brooch designed as a vessel for memory born of thoughts of some of her own objects which remain in her hometown. It was originally designed for the Strong & Precious Foundation, and features a w**e topaz from the only mineral mine in Ukraine which has remained open during the war. When exposed to the light over time, the stone will fade to clear, just as memories can blur.”

RESIDENT IN FOCUS: ALICE BIOLO

Across the road, Terrane considers jewellery through landscape, geology and material. Back at the boutique, another correspondence between stone, metal, and the body is unfolding through the work of our summer resident, Alice Biolo.

Working across kinetic jewellery and sculptural objects, Alice creates pieces designed to move, respond, and reveal themselves through interaction, and play. Lab-grown diamonds glide freely within silver settings; hidden interiors appear like mirrored worlds; light glints and cascades against oxidised surfaces. Scientific in their construction, bodily in experience.

Alice takes the principles of kinetic sculpture and brings them close to the body as the wearer becomes part of the mechanism; and touch, motion and discovery part of the work itself. These are pieces that ask to be witnessed beyond the still image.

Alice remains our summer resident for a little while longer. Come by the boutique to spend some time with her work before we welcome our autumn residents.

Ruth Tomlinson for Terrane at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2026

“An established member of the British craft jewellery community for over 20 years, Ruth’s designs are born of unconventional natural forms, carefully sourced, hand-cut stones and organic texture. She started her brand in 2001 after graduating from the Royal College of Art, with a focus on handcraft, responsible sourcing and unique design. Today, her collections are hand-made by one of the only all-women studios in Hatton Garden, London.

For the one-of-a-kind pieces in the exhibition, Ruth visited an artisanal mine in the village of Pohorabawa in Sri Lanka, to see first-hand how sapphires are mined, cut and polished. She was drawn to the ‘pre-form’ cutting stage, during which a gem-cutter will cut a rough shape and examine the stone, before making the final cut. The finished jewels combine raw, semi-cut and faceted sapphires alongside her signature granulation detail.”

Alice Cicolini for Terrane at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2026

“Inspired by color and pattern, Alice Cicolini’s work is infused with a reverence for craftsmanship, which she views as essential for social and cultural sustainability. She graduated from Central Saint Martins in 2009 with a Masters in Jewellery Design and has since worked as a designer and curator, alongside her own creative practice. She lived in India for many years, where she worked closely with Kamal Assat Meenakar, a meenakari enamel master, and Bablu, a gemstone carving master, in Jaipur. Their talent and expertise has left a lasting imprint on her work, and the production of her jewellery now nourishes a network of craftspeople in London and India.

The pieces in the exhibition are from her Landscape collection, produced with Kamal Meenakar and Bablu, to show how the tables can be turned when the stones – which themselves carry the energy of place – become vessels for enamel miniatures and natural wonders like rutilated quartz and landscape agate. In this context, human skill holds as much value as precious material.”
