Dunstable in Bloom.

Dunstable in Bloom. Dunstable in Bloom is a volunteer led group working closely with the Dunstable Town Council to provide vibrant successful floral displays.

We host an annual in bloom competition encouraging residents, businesses, schools and care homes to take part. Dunstable In Bloom
Dunstable In Bloom is a sub-group of Promoting Dunstable. This is an umbrella organisation that brings together many volunteer groups throughout the town, with the aim of undertaking projects which promote Dunstable. Promoting Dunstable and the Town Council are proud t

o work together on a variety of initiatives, in particular, Dunstable In Bloom. The Dunstable In Bloom committee is a group of people, representing voluntary organisations and the Town Council. Our aim is to make Dunstable a place that people enjoy living in or visiting. We achieve this by raising awareness of the environmental benefits of attractive floral displays, clean streets, well kept open spaces and communities working together around our town. This year, 2014, was our fifth entry into the Anglia In Bloom competition. It was, again, a great success in fostering co-operation between groups of people who would not otherwise work together. We have won three gold awards so far and are aiming to win gold again next year. Our record at Anglia In Bloom award ceremonies :-
2010 Gold and Best New Entry
2011 Gold
2012 Silver-Gilt
2013 Gold
2014 Silver-Gilt
Every Spring, we start our In Bloom Campaign with a Launch Event. One year we had Barry Norman as our guest star, another year we planted out the Physic Garden in Priory Gardens and one year we were in Frenchs Avenue with an Olympic Gold Medal winner planting wildflowers. This year our launch was in Grove House Gardens where we created a new gold and yellow shrub border designed to attract pollinating insects.

We are really proud of the work of the Dunstable Town Council Grounds Team - achieving Green Flag and maintaining Green Flag status is hard work and they’ve gone and done it ! Well done !

Dunstable’s “exceptional” green spaces recognised among the country’s best with Green Flag Award success in the town’s 40th anniversary year.

One ask …. Can someone create one post box topper please for Church Street …

Reality sets in - we have a huge community of crafters all wanting to help and take pride in their community that are not “green fingered” ….

Result …. By the 22 July we will have 10, yes 10 post box toppers and around a dozen bollard covers created by our community.

Around 125 ladies have come together in three groups and have created some absolutely amazing designs and have already started asking what’s next …. We have a plan …. Will tell you all soon …

In the meantime … from August 3rd the toppers and bollard covers will be on display for a longer period of time so they can be admired by many .. a full plan of where to find them will be released on the day ….

Until then …. Here’s a very quick taster …. Expect to be wowed !

We are so pleased to have what seems a bumper year for entries into our local competition, with each category sponsored by a local business.

Our judges will be visiting over the coming weeks and we are excited to see your creativity and your floral displays.

Judges will NOT contact you in advance unless they require access to your premises (Care Homes, Schools etc), so be prepared for their visit … deadhead your blooms, water regularly, keep the area clean and tidy … will all count towards impressing the judges!
They will be taking photos when they visit so we can show case each entry at our awards night on the 30 September.

Thank you Rotary Club of Dunstable for your sponsorship of our overall Dunstable in Bloom competition and to all category sponsors.

Thank you Friends of Dunstable Cemetery for your help this year in looking after these containers.

Today (Thursday 2 July) the Friends of Dunstable Cemetery spent some time tidying the floral baskets along the railings, before catching up over a well-deserved cuppa.

The Friends are a small, welcoming group of volunteers who share a love for the outdoors and a passion for keeping our local community spaces beautiful.

Gathering during the week, members enjoy the physical and mental benefits of fresh air and light gardening. It is a fantastic way to meet new people, stay active, and give back to Dunstable.

The group meet the first and third Thursday of the month from 10 am to 12 noon. Together, they work hand-in-hand with the Dunstable Town Council grounds team to maintain the exceptionally high standards of upkeep at the cemetery.

Everywhere you look in our town there beautiful floral displays … we have been out planting an empty bed this morning in Eleanor’s Cross to continue our partnership with the land owners who have contributed towards the plants and hanging baskets that Dunstable in Bloom have provided.

Thanks to Dunstable Town Council grounds team for dropping off the plants and soil.

Community at its best, engaging with local businesses whilst we were there too - thanks to Natasha’s for the bucket of water (sorry there was a hole in our bucket!) and to Cakes by Clare Kelly who kindly allowed us to wash our hands …

Enjoy as you walk through this little unforgotten area of our town.
