Not long now until THE BOOK OF BIRDS - A Field Guide to Wonder & Loss is published, the highly anticipated collaboration by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris - the creators of The Lost Words.

We are thrilled to be hosting a very special event with Jackie to celebrate - a dawn chorus walk along the River Barle, followed by a hearty vegetarian breakfast and book signing at Mortimers.

Jackie is ‘…hoping for dipper, song thrush, kingfisher- but honestly, I will take what I am given in the thinning of the air.

Woodland, beside the Barle. There will be fresh green light through the leaves and the scent of spring.’

Tickets are available from our website - SOLD OUT

Spring Equinox 2026Sun blazing in the cool March air, dropping lazy moods and ‘tomorrow can wait’ tones, the wild readers gather for our first sojourn into Burridge Woods this year. In slow amble we snake up as the trail rises, dips and curves, nudging at the hill nape, bound for ‘The Den’. ...

Stunning walk this morning to Dulverton’s alternative venue, The Den to check the route (and seating plan!) for our Wild Folk walkers this weekend.

We heard goldcrest, great tit, wren, blackbird, robin, chaffinch, blue tit, coal tit, woodpecker, raven and pheasant!

Also spotted our first brimstone butterfly of the year.

If you wish to join Jackie Morris and Tamsin Abbott in the woods of Dulverton, please book your place via the website.

The forecast looks similar to today’s sunshine - hurrah!

Wild Folk Rises!

We do hope you are planning to join us next Saturday for either our morning book signing or the afternoon walk with Jackie and Tamsin to celebrate Wild Folk's reincarnation by Chelsea Green Publishing.

There are still tickets remaining if you have been looking to the sky before committing. The weather forecast looks promising - light cloud with a gentle breeze, 14°.

If it does decide to rain, we still plan to walk, and Jackie will read to us, so you needn't fear getting your book wet - Jackie's copy got drenched at the Summer Solstice! You are also invited to bring your Black Fox embroideries to work on surrounded by the trees of Burridge Woods.

Snowdrops spill the winter verges, under eaves and scrub edges, gloaming and radiant in salt-white clusters, rising in the scruffets and long forgotten stretches. Freshly starched ranks with hoods hanging low, nodding nobly from these cold, sodden soils, slight and tight as winter deepens and recoil...
