Our latest upload comprises a diverse offering from the Ancient British series. Some call them Iron Age coins, some Celtic, but whatever you call them, there's no denying their beauty!

These miniature masterpieces were struck 2,000 years ago by people who lived in mud huts. Not only that, but they then managed to survive buried in the ground for 2,000 years before being rediscovered, allowing us to admire them today.

What an awesome journey and tangible link to history.

Today we have added a good selection of Roman coins, including a selection from an old collection of silver denari from the Roman Republic, the earliest Roman silver coins available.

Followed by a good selection of 1st Century denari, high-grade bronze follies from the Tetrarchy & House of Constantine.

Ending with a silver siliqua from one of the less successful emperors, Flavius Victor from the late 4th Century AD who ruled the Western empire for around a year!

A selection of English hammered coins have been uploaded today, including some nice short cross pennies and Henry VIII groats, ending with a few good Stuart period coins with strong portraits.

An interesting selection of coinage from Anglo Saxon England has been uploaded today.

Early sceatta including coins depicting the bust of the Norse god Wodan (Odin), a rare series Q coin likely depicting Christ and even a gold coin from the Merovingians.

On to the Mid Saxon kingdoms with coins of Eadberht Praen of Kent, Offa and Coenwulf from Mercia, joined by Anglo Viking coinage and lastly 4 pennies from the Late Saxon period.

This Belgae “Cogwheel Smiler” Gold Quarter Stater, struck in the 1st century BC, is an exceptionally rare type with only 8 examples known. Featuring the distinctive turf cutter motif alongside cogwheels, and a beautifully stylised horse beneath a floral sun and comet, the design perfectly captures the bold imagination of Celtic art.

Rarely offered for sale and believed to be closely related to the famous Cheriton Smiler staters, this piece is not only historically important but visually unforgettable.

This Cantiaci silver unit of Touto, struck around AD 1–15, features a beautifully detailed bearded portrait alongside a remarkable depiction of Winged Victory walking right — a design unlike anything else in ancient British coinage.

The quality of this example is extraordinary, with sharp detail and artistic strength rarely encountered for the type, surpassing even the illustrated ABC plate coin.

✨ This rare Dobunni Gold Stater, issued by Eisu around AD 20–43, features the iconic tree symbol on one side and a beautifully stylised three-tailed horse on the other — complete with hidden face, wheel motif, and the full EISV inscription above.

What makes this example particularly special is its exceptional quality. Strongly struck in good gold with full inscription and impressive detail on both sides, it’s far superior to most surviving Eisu staters seen today.

Struck by the Catuvellauni tribe around 45–25 BC, this rare coin carries the abbreviated name of Addedomaros above a beautifully stylised Celtic horse, surrounded by the bold symbolism and flowing geometry that define Iron Age British coinage.

This exceptionally rare Regini Gold Stater, struck in the 1st Century BC, is one of only 34 known examples. Featuring crossed wreaths, stylised hair locks, and a beautifully detailed horse beneath a spiral sun, it captures the bold artistry and mystery of Iron Age Britain.

Found near Chichester in 2006 and formerly part of the Chris Hamlyn Collection, this remarkable coin is now part of The London Collection of Ancient British Coins — an important collection celebrating some of the finest and rarest ancient British coinage ever assembled.
