My boys surprised me for my birthday by making me a “watch maker” 😂

All I have to do is put the parts in the box, close the lid… and it will magically make a watch for me.

If it actually works, it might be the greatest time-saver in history!

Today also marks exactly 15 years since I first decided to retrain as a watchmaker.

Back in 2011, I’d just returned to the UK after spending most of my twenties in China. Job hunting was tough, so I gave myself a two-week deadline to pick a completely new career, which would coincide with my birthday.

I spent days in the library reading every career book I could find: pilot, gardener, doctor, even masseuse. In the end, I walked out with a book about watches.

I didn’t even own a watch at the time and had never heard of watchmaking as a real job. But something about it felt romantic… and the more I read, the more I realised it was the perfect fit.

One of the best decisions I ever made.

Great to meet so many passionate watch enthusiasts at British Watchmakers’ Day yesterday.

As we mark the 90th anniversary of the Spitfire, it has been a real privilege to work with such an extraordinary aircraft and help retell the heroic story of one particular Spitfire and her pilots through The Few watch.

I also shared a first sneak peek of our next project for 2027 — Red Coat — which will celebrate another remarkable chapter in Britain’s rich history.

I'm now an author!

Hot off the press is my first book. It details the everything you'd want to know about the Spitfire, and covers the complete history of one specific WW2 Spitfire, ML295, as well as the pilots that flew in her - this is the aircraft that I've used parts from in my The Few watch, with the process of making this unique watch being covered in the final chapter.

It's around 100,000 words and 600 images and has been a marathon effort to get finished, but I am really pleased with how it has turned out.

I may be biased, but it's probably the best book on Spitfires ever written. 😁

It was printed, stitched and bound in the UK. The cover design is an homage to pilot's war time training manuals.
