I am one of the few people here in the UK to do Kintsugi repair work using real gold. Normally Kintsugi is used to repair broken ceramics, using traditional japanese lacquers as adhesives. For this job however I had a customer bring me a bowl that was very precious to the family, which had broken some 15 years earlier, but the pieces kept on the faintly wished for hope that someday it might be able to be repaired and restored. The problem was, this particular bowl was made from glass and not ceramics, meaning that the traditional techniques and adhesives would simply not work. In recent years I have innovated new Kintsugi techniques for repairing broken gemstones, and so with a little innovation I was able to repair this well-loved heirloom back into a single piece again, using a modern variation of the Kintsugi technique, using a combination of multiple modern adhesives, and finishing with gold with an approximate 99% purity. The results have created a remarkably beautiful and unique piece, much to the delight of my customers.
