Phew! What a busy week!

24 orders made, completed and sent out this week alone. This really is one of the busiest times of the year for me, and I thought it was a good opportunity to give you a little insight into what goes on behind the scenes of my little business.

Every single order is completed individually, one at a time, carefully packaged and prepared for posting. And every single part of that process is done by me.

Being a small business owner means I’m a bit of a jack of all trades!

Alongside actually making your jewellery, there’s so much more that goes into running Melanie’s Memorial Jewellery:
• Marketing and creating content for social media
• Answering enquiries and messages
• Helping customers choose the right design
• Ordering materials, silver and components
• Receiving, logging and safely storing your inclusions
• Keeping track of every individual order
• Preparing invoices and processing payments
• Designing and making each individual piece
• Quality checking and finishing every item
• Making certificates, care instructions,labels, and little seed bombs.
• Photographing finished pieces
• Packaging each order carefully
• Preparing postage labels and arranging dispatch
• Taking parcels to the post office
• Keeping the website and listings up to date
• Managing accounts, paperwork and all the other admin that comes with running a business! The dreaded HMRC tax returns.

It’s easy to see a finished piece of jewellery arrive through your letterbox, but there’s a whole lot of work behind that little parcel.

I do absolutely everything myself, from the first message you send to the moment your finished piece is on its way back to you.

I’m incredibly grateful to every single person who chooses my little business, trusts me with something so precious and allows me to do a job I genuinely love.

So if replies are sometimes a little slower or I’m not quite as active on social media as usual, please know I’m probably tucked away in the studio working through your orders. Please remember I’m also a full time nurse, mum and wife.

A little reminder about how my business works, especially with Christmas approaching.

I’ve recently had a few enquiries asking whether I can complete certain items at very short notice, so I thought it might be helpful to explain a little about how things work behind the scenes.

As many of you know, I work from my home studio and I don’t hold stock of finished pieces or jewellery components. Every item is ordered specifically for the customer who has chosen it. Depending on the piece, my silver supplier can take anything from a couple of days to four weeks to get the item to me.

From the point of receiving your ashes or other inclusions, I always estimate approximately 4 to 8 weeks for your piece to be completed. This allows me time to create your jewellery properly, carry out quality checks and account for any unexpected issues, such as supplier delays, items not passing quality checks on arrival or illness.

Of course, if you have a special occasion coming up or need something sooner, please do message me. I’m always happy to see what I can do, and where it’s possible to accommodate a quicker turnaround, a fast-track service will be available at an additional cost. A week turnaround however is somewhat unrealistic.

Now, a little reminder about Christmas orders!

I’m currently estimating completion dates of around 8th December, which means realistically we only have around another week before I may need to close Christmas orders to ensure I can manage the workload.

Christmas is by far my busiest time of year, and although I will always do my best to accommodate everyone, I also need to be realistic about what I can achieve as one person working from home.

If you’re hoping to order a special memorial piece for Christmas, please don’t leave it until the last minute. Ordering sooner gives us the best chance of getting everything organised in time.

My current orders are now due to be dispatched on 4th December, so Christmas is definitely getting busy!

I’m not sure how much longer I’ll be able to keep taking orders for my CZ baubles and resin baubles before I have to close orders to make sure I can get everything made in time.

🌊 Introducing Forever Sea Glass 🌊

I’ve been working on a new idea, and I’m really excited to share it with you.

For those who loved the sea, the beach, exploring new places or simply being on holiday, this could be such a beautiful way to remember them.

Forever Sea Glass is a collection of little glass pieces made using your loved one’s ashes, designed to be taken on your travels and returned to the sea.

Imagine taking a little piece of them with you on your adventures. When you find that special beach, somewhere they loved, or a place you’ve always wanted to visit, you can throw the glass to the waves.

Over time, the sea and sand will continue to tumble the glass, just as they do with natural sea glass. Their little pieces will remain part of the ever-changing coastline, shaped by the waves and sand.

A little reminder to anyone who has sent inclusions to me recently.

If I haven’t messaged you to let you know that your inclusions have arrived, this may be why!

I really cannot stress enough how important it is to pay the correct postage when sending ashes and other inclusions through the post. Unfortunately, I regularly receive parcels where insufficient postage has been paid, and this can mean they are delayed in the postal system for weeks, sometimes even months!

When ashes are packaged into little bags, they can settle and bunch up at the bottom, making the parcel thicker than you might expect. Please remember that postage is calculated on both the weight AND the thickness.

This is why I always advise placing ashes in a small foil package or little bag that can be flattened out, and taking your parcel to the post office to make sure the correct postage is paid.

Generally speaking, a large letter is usually sufficient, but please don’t assume this will always be the case.

I also regularly receive far more ashes than I actually need. I generally ask for around 1 teaspoon of ashes, yet I’ve had people send me over 5 tablespoons!

I completely understand that you want to make sure I have enough to work with, but please don’t feel you need to send so much. A small amount really is enough for most pieces, and I will always let you know if I need any more.

I know sending these precious inclusions can be daunting, and I want the process to be as straightforward and stress-free as possible for everyone. Making sure your parcel is packaged correctly and has the right postage will help ensure your loved one’s precious inclusions reach me safely and without unnecessary delays.
