Sulwen Arts

Sulwen Arts Welcome to my miniature art world, influenced by the beautiful nature that surrounds me in my quiet corner in West Wales. Welcome to Sulwen Arts!

I am a young welsh artist with many strings to my bow, the most current one being handmade polymer clay (fimo) jewellery. I began with the welsh landscapes, rediscovered my love of miniatures, and am now exploring every possible theme there is! I love making them, and the possibilities are endless.

The popular Boletus edulis fungus (also known as Cep, Porcini or Penny Bun) appear in woodlands between August and November. The Boletus family are distinct due to having pores that look like sponge, rather than the usual mushroom gills, and the Cep i...

Rosehip syrup in 1/12 scale...glass bottle from "my tiny world", pan and spoon made by me.
I'm not sure why but I imagined it would be simple to make a little bottle stopper for the bottle...but an hour later and carefully bent and shaped lever wire number 3 (because I kept dropping them and they then immediately ceased to exist) I did finally manage to achieve a nice looking stopper!
In the process I learned that this type of bottle closure is called the lightning closure, due to the fast sealing mechanism. It was invented in 1870 and was such a good design that it is still widely used today.

I got these lovely fat quarters and a whole bag of scraps from Funkee Moon Fabrics in Cardigan the other week. He was very helpful hunting down the smallest prints and even cracked out his own stash of scraps to find more for me! I love the mushroomy ones especially, but not entirely sure what to make with them πŸ€”...lining fabric for miniature baskets? A little kitchen apron? Any ideas much appreciated!

Did you know that up until the 1880's sugar mostly came in cone form? People had dedicated sugar boxes they would keep them in and special tools called sugar nippers to crack off lumps of it for use. The smaller the cone the better quality and therefor more expensive it was. Some of the biggest cones were 3 feet tall! This miniature reproduction is just 15mm tall, so must be of the finest quality possible πŸ˜‰

Tiny halves of rosehips in 1:12 scale...Rosehips are a wonderful wild medicinal as they contain such high levels of vitamin C, perfect for boosting our immune system for the changing seasons. As long as the irritant hairs around the seeds are removed they can be eaten any way you like, though the most popular recipe is to make a syrup to keep through the winter months.

I'm trying a new thing to see if I can boost my productivity...I've set up a work space at my parents home out of town where its a lot more peaceful. I'm very lucky that they can do this for me, and as a bonus it means I get to enjoy this wonderful view of the sunsets again πŸŒ…

Our Story

Welcome to Sulwen Arts! I am a young(ish) welsh artist working for the most part in handsculpted polymer clay (fimo). I began with the welsh landscapes, rediscovered my love of miniatures, and am now exploring every possible theme there is! I love making them, and the possibilities are endless.

With a lively 5 year old and the recent addition of another little cherub, I haven’t been able to concentrate as much as I’d like to on my work, but as the children get older I’m sure I will become more available. Bear with! :)
