A rare place has just become available in my popular class in Romsey. It is predominantly for dressmaking, but other items are made, too. If this is of interest, then please message and I can send over more details.

So sad 😞

Gone are the days when it was normal to darn a hole in your socks or use a sewing machine to take in a pair of trousers. Now, a crochet blanket is more likely to be made by your grandmother than to be one of the skills in your arsenal.

A survey shows that sewing and needlework are the most endangered domestic skills. Just 27% an operate a sewing machine confidently and only 16% are proficient knitters, according to Good Housekeeping’s domestic skills survey.

Darning is nearly obsolete as only 9% are doing it regularly, while just 10% still crochet. They are also among the skills that respondents were least invested in passing on to future generations

What a fabulous first sewing retreat for our group. We worked on trouser fitting, spending time on our toiles, amending our paper pattern before cutting main fabric. We can't thank Nicola enough, from The Dressmaker's Guild. Her energy and passion for everything sewing was so infectious. We've come away with new skills and buzzing to try out new ideas. We've deepened relationships and feel utterly energised. Thank you to all that participated, to make it so special. We will show the finished trousers when we can.

You may, or may not, have heard of SewHayleyJane . Although her business is international, she is local to us. Hayley is just amazing (she talks about her journey here). Not everyone has time to go to a class and meet with others, and of course, sewing is quite a solitary activity. Hayley is filling that gap, and runs a virtual sewing hub. Her energy and enthusiasm exudes. I'd love for you to take a look perhaps be part of something really special.
