Wishbone rings have always been one of our most popular wedding ring styles, and the Orange Blossom version is a particular favourite.

The shape works beautifully alongside many engagement rings, giving a little more room around the setting while still sitting neatly alongside it.

This one is individually handmade in 18ct gold, with the Orange Blossom pattern hand-engraved around the band and a 2mm fair trade Canadian diamond set at the point.

If a standard wishbone shape isn’t quite right for your engagement ring, we can also make your wedding ring shaped to fit, following the contours of your existing ring so the two sit together perfectly.

The Orange Blossom design has been part of my collection for many years, and paired with the wishbone shape, it makes a lovely choice if you want a wedding ring with plenty of detail rather than a plain band.

If you are thinking about proposing at Christmas and commissioning a ring?

September might feel early, but if you want a ring designed and handmade by me for Christmas, this is the time to get in touch.

You don’t need to know exactly what you want; I can help with that. Some clients come with inspiration from a previous design of mine, which gives a starting point.

Share some details with us about your partner. The jewellery they already wear, whether they prefer yellow gold, white gold or platinum, the colours they’re drawn to and any clues they may have dropped about engagement rings.

From there, we can look at styles and gemstones. I have an extensive selection of unique sapphires and diamonds available, including some beautiful individual sapphires, or I can look at sourcing something specific if we don’t find the right one amongst those I have.

Once we’ve chosen the gemstone, we can work through the design together before I begin making the ring by hand here in Cornwall.

For a Christmas proposal, we would need to start as soon as possible. Bespoke commissions take time, particularly if I need to source a gemstone for you.

And if you’re worried because you don’t know their exact ring size, don’t let that stop you from starting the conversation.

When you’re thinking about a bespoke engagement ring, you don’t have to start with the ring design. You could start here.

These are three bicolour sapphires currently in my extensive gemstone collection, and each one could take a ring in a completely different direction.

You might be drawn immediately to one particular sapphire, or want to look through a few before you decide. Once we have the gemstone, we can start thinking about the ring around it: the metal, setting, whether you want to add diamonds and the overall style.

I often find that choosing the sapphire first makes those decisions much easier.

And if you’re planning a proposal over Christmas or New Year, now is the time to start thinking about your ring. A bespoke commission takes time.

You’ll probably recognise my Orange Blossom wedding ring by now, but you might not know that I also make it in 9ct yellow gold.

It has the same Orange Blossom pattern, hand-engraved around the full band with a fine milgrain border.

So if you’ve had your eye on Orange Blossom but have been looking specifically for a 9ct gold wedding ring, I can make one for you.

If purple is the colour you keep coming back to, this sapphire is a particularly beautiful one.

Roseland has a natural, untreated purple sapphire at its centre, with violet, blue and little flashes of lavender and pink appearing as the light moves through it. Those colours are entirely natural; nothing has been done to alter or enhance them.

I designed the ring around this particular sapphire, adding marquise and round diamonds on either side. The yellow gold brings warmth to the purple and gives the whole ring a slightly richer feel.

This is one of the reasons I love working with natural sapphires. You can look through several that are technically the same ‘colour’, and all of them will be different.

If you love the idea of bringing a little nature into your wedding ring, Willow is one of my favourites.

I make each ring individually in 18ct gold, before the leaf design is hand carved around the band.

What I particularly love is that the pattern goes all the way around.

And because every ring is handmade and the leaves are carved by hand, there will always be those tiny differences from one Willow to the next.

If you’re looking for an engagement ring with a larger centre gemstone, bespoke gives us the freedom to really consider the proportions of the whole ring.

This commission was built around an exceptional 1.88ct natural grey diamond. Its emerald cut gave me the starting point for the design, with the setting following those strong angles and Canadian diamonds arranged on either side.

It’s a substantial ring, and that was very much the intention.

I currently have a small number of larger diamonds and sapphires in my gemstone collection that would lend themselves beautifully to a ring of this scale.

They’re all very different, so the design would begin with the gemstone you’re drawn to. From there, we can look at the setting, metal, additional gemstones and proportions together, creating the ring around that particular gemstone.

You can take inspiration from one of my previous bespoke commissions like this one, without your finished ring needing to be the same.

When you’re choosing a gemstone for an engagement ring, it’s important to think about the metal it will set in.

The same gemstone can look surprisingly different against yellow gold, platinum or white gold.

Warmer metals can bring out completely different tones within a sapphire, while the cooler colour of platinum can be particularly beautiful with greens, blues and some of the more unusual shades you find in natural sapphires.

Pentillie is a lovely example. I chose platinum for this green Australian sapphire because I loved how the coolness of the metal worked with the colours within the gemstone, rather than competing with them.

But there isn’t one metal that is automatically ‘right’ for a particular colour. When I’m designing a ring, I’m looking at the individual gemstone in front of me and considering what will flatter it best.

Natural sapphires can contain several colours and tones within one gemstone, which makes choosing the metal another really interesting part of designing the ring.
