I’ve been brewing this idea for a while… A collection of candles, each with its own floral scent and flower story on the back of the jar.

The first is Bluebell ~ meaning gratitude, and inspired by cool green woods in bloom.

And Sweet Pea ~ also a flower of gratitude, and an obviously beautiful scent we all know and love.

For now, you can only find them as part of our crowdfunder to help rescue a little dog in Spain,

https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/qr/Xy28qZLW?utm_campaign=sharemodal&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=shortlink

I do hope to grow the collection though, and eventually bring them onto the website. Violet, Lavender, and Rosemary are very nearly finished!

Thank you so much to everyone who has shared, donated, or sent kind messages already. It really does mean such a lot to us ❤️

FORGET-ME-NOT ~ For Memories

The forget-me-not’s Latin name, Myosotis, comes from the Greek for “mouse’s ear,” after the soft shape of its tiny leaves. In German folklore, a knight and his lady once walked beside a river when she noticed a cluster of small blue flowers along the bank. As he stooped to gather them, the weight of his armour pulled him into the current. As he was swept away, he called out, “Forget me not!” She wore those flowers in her hair for the rest of her days, and they became a symbol of faithful love and remembrance. The flower was later adopted by Henry IV in 1398 as his emblem during exile ~ a sign of loyalty and return ~ and centuries later by the Freemasons, as a discreet token of recognition. In older belief, forget-me-nots were worn in May to guard against witchcraft and fairy enchantment, while in the Victorian era, they were exchanged between lovers and sent to distant friends as a promise to remember.

Inspired by devotional saint’s medals ~ small tokens worn for comfort, protection, and remembrance...

I was drawn to the thought that flowers might hold that same quiet power, carried close as a form of protection, given as a blessing, or kept as a reminder of love and strength. Chosen to speak gently, when words themselves feel too much, or not quite enough.

Our medal charms are made with real flowers in sterling silver, using the traditional technique of lost wax casting.
Each piece is carefully boxed, with our seasonal scented posy, and a Victorian puzzle purse holds the meanings and folklore behind your flowers. The story there, when it’s opened.

DILL for Passion

Best known as a herb for cooking throughout the world, dill has also historically been used in a wide range of traditional medicines. The word dill originates from the Norse word dylla, meaning to sooth and is first recorded in ancient Egyptian medical texts dated to around 3000 B.C. In ancient Greece it was used to make fragrance and thought of as a sign of wealth and good luck. In the middle ages Christian Monks believed it to have magical properties that would keep the devil at bay, it was also used against witchcraft. If someone thought a witch had cast a spell on them, they would make a concoction which contained dill leaves, or wear a charm made from dill to protect themselves from the spell. In German folklore, a bride desiring an equal marriage could secretly bring dill and mustard seeds to the wedding and speak the words “I have you mustard and dill, husband, when I speak, you stay still!”

By the Victorian era, dill’s meaning had deepened. In the language of flowers, it came to speak of passion ~ a feeling both lively and enduring.

Water finding its way down the mountain.

I’ve been quieter here. It’s felt difficult to talk about work when everything beyond it feels so unsettled.

March has been quieter than we’re used to as well.
We’ve made changes, and even when they feel right, you never quite know how they’ll land. It does feel, perhaps, like the days of easily buying silver for Mother’s Day have passed, or shifted into something more considered, pieces now saved for the bigger moments, birthdays and milestones, rather than the smaller markers in between. That uncertainty is part of it, I suppose, but it doesn’t make it any easier to sit with.

Being here in Beddgelert steadies me though. The community, and the way things carry on regardless.

It’s not quite how I expected this season to feel, if I’m honest.

Still here, still making… Just a little more quietly for now.

VIOLET ~ For Love

Violets have had a long and celebrated place in the culture and science of civilisations since the ancient Greeks. It was long used as a pain relief because of the presence of salicylic acid, the chief ingredient in aspirin. The violet is the official flower of February, and the true Valentine flower. Legend has it, that when St Valentine was imprisoned he crushed the violets growing outside his cell to make ink which he used to write messages to his lover. Violets are useful in love spells and may be carried as an amulet to increase luck in love. It is said that if you dream of violets, your life is about to change for the better. They are considered a good luck gift to any woman, in any season, and it’s believed that if you harvest the first violet of Spring, your dearest wish will be granted.

This February half term we’ll be popping up in ‘The Gathering Room’ at Waterloo House Beddgelert…

I’m so excited about this ~ not only for us, but for Katie too, who is gently opening up the space as a place for gatherings, tastings, quiet events, and a carefully chosen mix of makers and artists. She’s building something really special there.

The room itself feels like stepping sideways into another world… stone walls, low light, a little bit secret and very magical. We’ll be her very first pop-up, which feels like such an honour.

So if you’re passing through Beddgelert between the 16th and the 23rd, do pop in, we’d love you to come and say hello…
