The Polymer Week advent calendar is quite different from the other two calendars I’ve reviewed. Rather than simply opening a new tool or material each day, you’re discovering a project and tutorial created by one of 24 international polymer clay artists. 🌏

Another observation I made is that there is considerably more jewellery projects in 2025 calendar than they were in Polymer Week’s 2024 calendar. So I’d characterise the difference as:

🎨 2024 was slightly more sculpture-led, experimental and focused on exploring techniques.

💍 2025 was more project-led and jewellery-heavy, although still incredibly varied in the techniques being taught.

2026 Advent Calendar is available to purchase now and I wonder what this year will bring us? 🤔✨

DIY your way through December! 🛠️🎨👨🏻‍🎨

For the longest time, I thought of myself as a crafter rather than an artist. I never went to art school, I work in colour, and somehow I had convinced myself that what I do doesn’t quite count as proper art. 🎨

Now that I’m a little wiser, I know that I am, actually, an artist. Although I still feel a bit shy saying it out loud. 😅

I’m an evenings-and-weekends kind of artist. The kind who has a day job because making art for a living would leave me starving and without recognition after I’m dead. 🎭

I also used to think that real sculptors worked in grey clay and painted their creations afterwards. Whereas I sculpt in colour. For some reason, I thought that made what I do less skilful.

But it doesn’t, does it? I’ve simply chosen a different way of bringing colour into my work. Instead of painting it all on afterwards, I mix my colours from colourful clay before I even start sculpting.

And then I discovered pastels! Suddenly I could add all those lovely little tints, shadows and accents that bring a face to life.

Take this little autumnal pumpkin guy, for example. 🎃 His orange colour comes from mixing red and yellow polymer clay together. But his yellow teeth, green stem and eyebrows, and those darker cheeks? That’s all pastel magic added on top.

We know a lot about creating art from polymer clay, but how much do we actually know about the people who make it? 👀

A chance encounter at a polymer clay workshop led me to meet Anna Ko, whose family owns Van Aken International, the company behind Kato Polyclay and the new Make & Bake clay. ✨ Van Aken International

What started as a conversation about yoga, farm animals and clay turned into a rather fascinating story about family businesses, art, difficult decisions and a new generation of polymer clay. 🎨

I’ve been a little quiet on here, but the creatures haven’t disappeared anywhere. In fact, I’m making more each day for something exciting toward the end of the year. 👩🏻‍🎨

Creepy but cute is an all-year-round aesthetic in my world, but I appreciate the extra love every October gives my little monsters. 🎃
