Beautifully hand carved; an antique brooch set with a shell cameo of the Doves of Pliny; almost certainly of Italian origin and worn to reflect the owners appreciation of Classical culture and artistry.

The doves of Pliny (or “Pliny’s doves”) is a mosaic created by Sosos of Perguma (present-day Turkey) and described by Pliny in his The Natural History, 1st century AD. One Dove drinking from a bowl, the others sunning themselves. Lang Antiques.

Very finely carved, making use of the thickly layered shell to achieve a highly sculpted relief effect, each feather picked out in the loveliest detail, this piece has the most romantic appeal for any lover of antiquities.

Over two centuries old and in lovely condition; a very interesting and collectable watch style Georgian silver Gilt vinaigrette by renowned silversmith Samuel Pemberton who was active early in the 19th-century and based in Birmingham.

A popular accessory from around the 1780’s; the vinaigrette was a small container, often of Silver or Gold designed to hold a scent-soaked sponge against the horrid, nay putrid odors to be found in the streets. Made of pure metals to prevent the acidic vinegar from corroding less fine metals, the vinaigrette is so named as the early perfume businesses used vinegar as a fixative to hold flower potions.

Some might say these were little more than fashionable little objects to flaunt one’s taste in luxurious perfumes and fine craftsmanship.

In a time before sanitation standards, such scent precautions were necessary to go through the world especially when foul smells were considered to carry illnesses. The oldest vinaigrettes date as far back as the 15th century. And their early history is connected to the pomander, a herb and perfume mixture carried in a metal container (often as a necklace) during the Black Death. MessyNessyChic

Samuel Pemberton specialised in small silver boxes and vinaigrettes. He was the third generation of makers in his family who were makers of caddy spoons, decanter labels, flatware and vinaigrettes etc.

This example is in gorgeous condition with light gilding to the outer repousse style and machine engraved surfaces and bright 18ct gilding to the inside (which looks untainted by use) where the miniature grill lifts to reveal the aperture for a fragrant sponge (or alternatively your precious miniature keepsakes). There are also a full set of delightful English hallmarks with the monarch’s head duty mark . Entirely delightful!

Quite the MOST special and captivating antique Edwardian Sapphire and Diamond drop earrings. Entirely hand crafted in a neat and careful manner to reflect the restrained and elegant manner so desired at the time. The beautiful quality gems are crisply milgrain bead set in Platinum; the whole effect a miniature perfection. Each of the tiny icy white rose-cut Diamonds faceted by hand and with character and personality to bring a gentle glimmer around the glowing cabochon cut blue Sapphires. Just divine!!

Antique earrings are one of the scarcer finds now, and as such these would make a very significant and unique gift; one to carry through the years as a family inheritance, giving them a new life.
