my name is Marlies and I am a jewellery designer and maker living and working in the beautiful seaside town of Brightlingsea in Essex, UK. After getting my degree in Holland where I am from, I met my husband while traveling the world and moved to the UK about five years ago. Despite that my work is still heavily inspired by growing up surrounded by flower fields in the north of H
olland and Tulips are featured regularly in my work. I grew up on the coast in Holland and live on the coast now where I go for long walks with my dog looking for inspiration in the wind and salty sea air. I have recently started making bits and pieces with sea glass that I have found on the beach down the road and I am hoping that it will become a large part of my new collection. I have always liked large gemstones and pearls and I tend to make quite a few pieces with 'just' one stone as I like the attention to be drawn to the stone rather than the rest of the ring. I go to work the same way with the sea glass that I find and make simple pieces with the glass as centerpiece. That said I also like intricate wire work pieces where I start with a stone or pearl and create a flowing web of wires around it that somehow evolves when I am working on the piece. I make everything by hand in my small studio upstairs while the dog snoozes next to me.
