There will be a change to our opening hours in the coming weeks as we are heading toward our summer break.

We are open this week as usual, and will then be closed from Sunday 2nd August to Monday 18th August, and will be reopening on Tuesday 18th August at 9.30am.

We would like to thank you all for your patience whilst we take some time to rest and recharge.

It is business as usual until the 2nd August however, so there is still some time yet to drop in and discuss all your jewellery requirements whether it is bespoke commissions, repairs, restoration or collection of work completed.

New to our Buck & Co stock and fresh from our Goldsmith's bench is this breathtaking 1.50ct old mine cut natural diamond solitaire ring.

Crafted by our Goldsmith in 18ct gold with yellow gold shank and white gold settings, this ring has been made in a very traditional style to complement the unique and historic diamond it contains.

The latest trend in diamond jewellery focuses on the antique cuts, and celebrates the uniqueness of each and every stone. This is very much a reaction against the rows of identical and characterless 'lab grown' diamonds seen in many jewellers windows (not at Buck & Co). We are lucky to have residing with us at the moment two fabulous old mine cut diamonds. Our regular clients will know that antique jewellery is one of our passions, and old mine cut diamonds are a quintessential part of high quality antique pieces.

These diamonds were cut by hand before the arrival of modern cutting tools and without the benefit of the computer programmes which are used now to assess the best cut for each diamond crystal. The old cut was designed to echo the natural shape of diamond octahedral crystal in order to minimise cutting; diamonds are the hardest natural substance on earth and are difficult to cut, particularly without electric tools, or the lasers used in modern diamond manufacture.

Old mine cuts are characterised by a cushion shape with rounded corners, a high crown and small table. An easily visible feature is the culet, the facet added on the bottom of the stone which is lacking in modern brilliant cut diamonds.

These stones were designed to look their best by candlelight, and provide a vintage feel to any piece of jewellery. As these are cut by hand each of these beautiful stones is a unique and individual piece, a survivor from the past when many have been recut in recent times to more modern cuts.

These beautiful stones are 1.50ct and 2.09ct respectively, with the 2.09ct stone having been reported on by the GIA for independent third party assessment and has the appropriate laser inscribed inscription.

A recent addition that our Goldsmith has made to our Buck & Co stock is this 18ct gold and 0.60ct natural diamond eternity ring.

Crafted from 18ct gold throughout, this beautiful and timeless ring features seven round brilliant cut natural diamonds particularly selected for their brightness. Our Goldsmith mounted these diamonds in claws to allow light to access the stones for extra scintillation and fire.

This ring is completed by full UK hallmarks including our personal Buck & Co Sponsors Mark, a legal requirement providing peace of mind to our clients and third party reassurance of the fineness of the gold with which this piece has been made.

This ring is currently a size P, a full resizing service can be provided if required.

Our client has kindly given permission for us to share the details of a commission piece which left us recently. This handmade solid link belcher chain was made with a combination of the client's own gold and sentimental family pieces of gold which our client had inherited.

Our Goldsmith melted the gold in batches and then processed the gold through the rolling mills many times, to create solid D section wire. The wire was annealed to soften the gold and make it pliable enough to be formed into individual solid links, which were then soldered together to form the chain. This sounds simple, but requires precision and experience to form a chain that that is robust enough to stand up to the rigors of daily wear, whilst remaining beautiful.

The finished chain was completed with full hallmarking at Birmingham Assay Office (including our Goldsmiths personal Sponsors Mark) and was then polished and cleaned before heading back to the owner in its new format. This piece is the ultimate in jewellery recycling, turning a range of differing pieces of gold into one wearable and unisex piece of jewellery suitable for any occasion.

It has been a hive of activity since we moved to our new premises, and we cannot believe how the time has flown! We are now comfortably settled in and would like to thank everyone who has dropped in to see us, and for all the positive feedback on our new space.

We have been busy with civic regalia restoration, preparing pieces for summer weddings and engagements and doing some fabulous bespoke pieces for our clients (more details to follow when we have time). Our Goldsmith has also been creating some fabulous new diamond pieces for our Buck & Co stock.

We are excited to have managed to obtain some beautiful old cut diamonds, as our regular clients will know they are a particular passion of ours. All are between 1ct and 2ct and we have some european old cuts, and some old mine cuts. These do not stay with us long, so do pay us a visit to view these beautiful stones.

Lastly, just to let you know we will be closing for a few days next week:

Some exciting news to share with you all is that when we re-open on Tuesday 5th May we will be in our new premises at number 8 Market House Arcade.

We have had a wonderful time in number 12 but needed a little more space for both us and our clients, so when the chance came up to move we decided to take the plunge.

Moving has been just as stressful as if we were going 1000 miles but we would like to thank our patient landlord for his support and encouragement, and all our fellow traders in the Market House Arcade, Bodmin for their support and for putting up with noise and disruption. Our thanks also the local companies who have made it possible: Phoenix Print for their incredible signage, Smith of Bodmin Removals for making light work of all our heavy glassware, Bodmin Flooring & Bed Centre for top quality service and for a beautiful build.

Most of all we would like to thank our wonderful clients. We have enjoyed getting to know you all, some of you for many years now and some more recently, but it has been an honour and a privilege to work for you all. We cannot wait to step into this new chapter with you all and we will be back to our benches and ready to welcome you into number 8 on 5th May!

As it is now April, it is time to celebrate the birthstone of the month which is the incomparable diamond.

One of the most prized and most traded gemstones, the diamond has exceptional lustre, brilliance and fire which combine to give diamonds the irresistible sparkle we all love. Diamonds are an excellent gemstone choice in jewellery as they are the hardest known natural substance on earth. This is reflected in the name 'diamond' which comes from the Greek 'adamas'; the unconquerable!

Diamonds have been used in jewellery since antiquity, when the natural crystals were polished rather than cut as the technology to cut these hard stones did not yet exist. Pictured are some diamonds in their natural crystalline forms; a diamond twinned crystal known as a macle, a diamond in a cubic form, and another in octahedral form. Shown next to a pair of diamond studs crafted by our Goldsmith, it illustrates the difference that the cutting and polishing process makes to these beautiful gemstones.

Made from carbon, a pure diamond will be colourless but trace elements can add colouring resulting in green, blue and yellow diamonds. The oldest diamonds formed 3.5 billion years ago, whilst younger stones have been dated to 660 million years ago. Formed deep within the earth's mantle under conditions of intense heat and pressure, diamonds are driven to the surface of the earth by molten magma travelling through volcanic pipes at super sonic speeds. Each and every natural diamond has had an exciting journey through time and space to make it into a piece of jewellery!

For our new and bespoke jewellery Buck & Co supply clients with natural and conflict free diamonds, and we are pleased to offer a range of diamonds which have been independently certified by the Gemological Institute of America, so you can relax and enjoy your purchase. This diamond grading process reassures the client not only that their diamonds are natural, but also verifies the colour, cut and clarity of the stone all of which are important factors in the overall valuation of the piece. All this information is presented on an official GIA certificate for each stone.

Pictured are a selection of GIA graded and certified diamonds as selected by our gemmologist, mounted in stunning pieces made by our in-house Goldsmith. These include a 1.00ct diamond and platinum moi et toi ring, and a 0.50ct diamond 18ct white gold pendant.
