Kate Phipps Jewellery

Kate Phipps Jewellery I am a contemporary jewellery designer maker. My jewellery is handmade using precious metals, gemsto For as long as I can remember, I have loved jewellery.

I love wearing, designing and making jewellery. Creating jewellery that people enjoy to wear gives me a huge buzz. I am inspired by the design possibilities that emerge when learning new making techniques and enjoy the challenge of finding ways to incorporate these techniques in my work. My jewellery is handmade using sterling silver, gold, gemstones, pearls and semi-precious beads. I experiment w

ith different combinations of shapes, colours and textures. I often design as I make, starting with a particular shape or gemstone that I want to incorporate in the piece. I then combine this with other materials until I have a vision of how I would like the end product to look. Some of my designs evolve from previous pieces that I feel I can add to, modify or improve. My current collections are largely based around different applications of press forming and stone setting. Press forming is a technique for creating three-dimensional shapes from flat metal sheet. I make different acrylic formers which determine the size and shape of the pressed metal. My pieces are wearable, contemporary and elegant. My jewellery is hallmarked at Birmingham Assay Office.

A little look behind the scenes of my Swift bird drop earrings - from silver sheet to a soft, subtle polish.

I love this stage where everything comes together and the details start to catch the light just right ✨

Would you wear these as an everyday piece or save them for something special?

I make replacement single earrings for pieces I’ve made - so if you ever lose one, it doesn’t mean the end of the pair.

A little press forming mishap on a replacement earring turned into a brand new pair - accidental upgrade?

Not everything goes to plan at the bench, but sometimes that’s where the best ideas come from. I got the direction wrong on this one, so instead of scrapping it, I started again and made a matching pair.

Honestly, I love both versions… what do you think?

I’m working on another remodelling commission. I love transforming old jewellery into new pieces, changing their shape and form into something to be treasured. I think it’s one of the best things about working with gold.

What would you have melted down and what would you have it made in to?

Hello, sorry it’s been a while. I’ve been quietly busy behind the scenes with a bit of admin, but more excitingly, I’ve been making a new 9 carat gold ring from an inherited pendant. It has a flat top for a clean, contemporary look, with a softly curved profile on the inside to make it comfortable to wear. I can’t wait to share the finished piece with you.
