To trace the roots of Hockley Mint we must journey back to 1953, when the first generation of the Merrell family set upon an idea. The goal was to create a specialist casting company, located in the heart of Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, that offered quality precious metals and showcased the unbeatable skill of British craftsmen and women. This commitment to family values, British quality and st

andard-setting craftsmanship only strengthened with time; ensuring the Merrell family name became synonymous with the finest quality casting. By 1992, the second generation of the Merrell family had ideas of their own. Building on the foundations their parents had built some 40 years earlier, a decision was made to expand into finished mounts, fine jewellery, polishing, setting and bespoke design. To encapsulate all this and more, the Merrell family set upon a fresh name: Hockley Mint. Today, Merrell Casting and Hockley Mint are entirely intertwined and operate side-by-side from the same premises. The combined efforts of multiple generations of the same family have established our business as one of the largest independent jewellery manufacturers in Europe, specialising in everything from hand-carved waxes to ready-to-wear collections.

What a lovely weekend at the CMJ Autumn Trade Event!

We had a brilliant time exhibiting, catching up with familiar faces and meeting so many people from across the industry — and the weekend was made even more special when we were named Sustainability Champion 2026 at the CMJ Awards. 💚

We’re incredibly proud to receive this recognition for the sustainability initiatives we’ve worked so hard to put in place. It’s a wonderful achievement for the whole team and motivates us to keep looking for ways to make a positive difference.

We had a great time at New Designers in July and were delighted to present our award to Aurora Stevens from the University of Dundee for her Black Vine Necklace.

The judges, Gary, Kevan and Julie, loved Aurora's creative use of organic materials and metals, praising the movement of the piece and its outstanding design. Inspired by the connection between food, plants and nature, her collection offers a thoughtful response to our relationship with the environment.

We're looking forward to welcoming Aurora to the workshop for a week's placement in early September. Congratulations again, Aurora! 👏

Are you an experienced Jewellery Mounter looking for your next opportunity?

Join our busy workshop in the heart of Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter and become part of our skilled team.

We're looking for someone with experience in:
✨ Laser welding
✨ Mounting all types of precious metal cast components
✨ Ring resizing
✨ Soldering techniques
✨ Hand mounting finished jewellery, including wedding rings, pendants and earrings
✨ Finishing techniques, including barrelling and rhodium plating
✨ Working with 9ct, 14ct, 18ct & 22ct gold, palladium and platinum
✨ Using the correct compounds, mops and finishing tools
✨ Following written instructions and maintaining exceptional attention to detail
✨ Producing customer orders accurately to the highest quality standards
