Bealtaine (BAWL-tin-uh (Ulster dialect pronunciation))
Such a beautiful day to mark the beginning of summer.
Bealtaine is an ancient celtic festival that marks the time when the earth awakens, and the abundance of nature begins to unfurl in full bloom.
Traditionally, Bealtaine was a time when cattle were driven out to high pastures, making it a festival associated with pastoralism and the renewal of life on the land. This seasonal shift was marked not only by agricultural activities but also by a deep reverence for nature’s cycles. With the first flush of summer, communities would come together to celebrate the fertility of the land and its creatures, giving thanks for the prosperity that would come in the months ahead.
There has been a strong revival of the old celtic festivals and traditions. For some folks, they will travel to festivals to celebrate with other, especially on the Hill of Uisneach, and for some, it's quietly observing nature awaken from its wintery sleep in their gardens or on a meandering nature walk.
This aquamarine ring popped into my head when I was thinking about Bealtaine today. The brightness of the blue aquamarine which is associated with water. The yellow gold setting, the lighting of the fires, and warm golden sunshine. The Rippled band reminding us to look forward to those beautiful summer days spent at the beach, dipping in the sea.
Take a look around you this weekend to see nature awakening... it's rather magical to observe!
