A diamond can chip, even though it is the hardest natural gemstone.

The reason is that hardness and toughness are not the same thing. Hardness describes how well a gemstone resists scratching, while toughness describes how well it resists chipping or breaking.

The outer edge of a diamond, known as the girdle, is often one of its most vulnerable areas. Exposed points, sharp corners and worn claws can also leave a stone more susceptible to damage from a hard knock.

To protect a diamond ring:

• Remove it during heavy or hands-on tasks
• Be careful around stone and metal surfaces
• Have the claws checked if they appear worn or damaged
• Stop wearing the ring if the stone feels loose

Emerald, diamond, emerald. A simple sequence with plenty of impact.

These drop earrings are crafted in 9ct yellow gold, with a round emerald at the top, a round brilliant-cut diamond beneath, and a larger round emerald completing the drop.

Each stone is held in a smooth bezel setting, giving the design a clean, modern finish while allowing the rich green colour to take centre stage.

Opal is quite different from many other gemstones because it contains water within its structure.

Very dry conditions, strong heat and sudden temperature changes can contribute to fine fractures known as crazing.

It is particularly useful to know at this time of year, as temperatures drop and indoor heating starts going back on.

For cleaning, warm soapy water is the safest option. Steam and ultrasonic cleaners should be avoided.

The blue and violet tones of tanzanite work beautifully at this time of year, especially against darker autumn colours.

A new piece we have just finished, and the photographs really do not do this one justice.

At the centre is a stunning 4ct blue-violet tanzanite, set in platinum with a half-moon diamond to either side.

We particularly like the small detail of the talon claws used to set the stones. It is subtle, but it adds something extra to the overall design while keeping the focus exactly where it should be.

When you think of sapphire, blue is probably the first colour that comes to mind.
