Why you feel like you have stopped learning (and how to fix it)

Does this sound like you?
You are not a beginner anymore. You can have basic conversations. But suddenly... it feels like you have hit a wall. You are not getting better anymore, and your motivation is disappearing.

First of all: Congratulations! This means you have reached the "Intermediate Plateau." It’s actually a sign of progress, not failure.

In the beginning, everything is new, so you feel fast growth. Now, the wins are smaller and harder to see. To break through this wall, you need to change your strategy:

1. Stop Studying, Start Living: If you are still only using textbooks, you are stuck. Switch your phone to your target language. Follow influencers in that language. Make it part of your environment.

2. Focus on Output: You likely understand 80% of what you hear, but can only speak 20%. Start journaling or recording yourself speaking for 2 minutes a day.

3. Find a Stretch Goal: Don't just learn Spanish/English. Set a goal to watch a specific movie without subtitles or give a 5 minute presentation.

The Secret: The plateau is where most people quit. If you keep going now, you are about to reach true fluency.

BE HONEST:
On a scale of 1 to 10, how motivated do you feel today?
1 = I am struggling 😫
10 = I am on fire!

Tell me your number, and I will send you a quick tip to boost it!

“I need 2 hours a day to learn a language." (Actually, you only need 15 minutes!)

Let’s be honest. When you think about studying, do you imagine sitting at a desk for hours with a heavy textbook? No wonder you are procrastinating.

The truth is, consistency beats intensity every single time.

Research shows that your brain retains more information in short, daily bursts than in one 4 hour "cram session" once a week. If you have 15 minutes, you have time to become fluent.

My "Busy Person" 15 Minute Routine:

•5 Mins: Listen to a podcast or music in your target language while making coffee.

•5 Mins: Learn 3 new words and use them in a sentence (out loud!).

•5 Mins: Read one short news article or social media post.

That’s it. In one year, that 15 minutes a day adds up to over 90 hours of practice.

The Secret is, it’s not about finding time but replacing time. Trade 15 minutes of mindless scrolling for 15 minutes of growth.

BE HONEST:
How many minutes did you spend scrolling on your phone today? (Check your screen time!) 📱😅

If you spent that time on English or Spanish instead, where would you be in 3 months? Tell me your goal below.

Why your accent is not the problem (it's your tongue! )

Ever feel like you are saying the right word, but it just sounds off? It’s usually because you are using the mouth positions of your native language to try and speak a new one.

Today, let’s fix the most common stumbling blocks for both English and Spanish learners

🇺🇸 FOR ENGLISH LEARNERS: The "TH" sound
Most people try to make this sound with their teeth closed.

The Fix: Stick your tongue out slightly between your teeth and blow air. If you don't look a little silly, you are doing it wrong.😀

Practice: "The thing they thought was there."

🇪🇸 PARA ESTUDIANTES DE ESPAÑOL: La "RR" (The Rolling R)

Stop trying to "growl" from the back of your throat!

The Fix: Your tongue should tap the "ridge" right behind your upper front teeth the same spot you touch when you say the letter "D" or "T" in English.

Practice: "Perro," "Carro," "Rápido."

The Secret: Pronunciation is a muscle memory, not just a mental one. You have to train your mouth like an athlete.

RECORD YOURSELF:
I want to hear you! Record a 5 second voice clip or video of you saying one of the practice words above and post it in the comments. I will give you a "Pronunciation Grade" and a tip to improve it!

Don't do this! 3 Cultural "No Nos" you won't find in a textbook.

You can have perfect grammar, but if you don't know the culture, you might still end up in an awkward situation. 😅 Here are 3 things you should avoid if you want to respect the locals

1) Personal Space (The "Bubble")

•In English speaking countries (especially the US/UK) People value their personal space. Standing too close while talking can make others feel uncomfortable. Keep about an arm's length away!

•In Spanish speaking countries: It’s the opposite! Conversations are close, and "The Double Kiss" (two kisses) or a hug is a standard greeting. Pulling away can seem cold or rude.

2. Being "On Time"

• English (The "Professional" Rule): If a meeting is at 9:00, you should be there at 8:55. Being on time is considered late in many professional English settings.

•Spanish (The "Social" Rule): In many Latin American cultures or Spain, if a party starts at 8:00 PM, showing up at 8:00 PM might mean the host is still in the shower. Showing up 15–30 minutes "late" is often the polite thing to do socially.

3. How are you?" vs. "¿Cómo estás?" 🤔

•English: Most of the time, "How are you?" is just a greeting. People expect you to say "Good, thanks!" and keep walking. They don't actually want a medical report!

•Spanish: When someone asks "¿Cómo estás?", they are often genuinely prepared for a 5 minute conversation about your day.

Stop sounding like a beginner! Upgrade your "Very"

If you use the word "Very" (or Muy) in every sentence, listen up, it’s not wrong, but it makes your speech sound repetitive and basic.

Native speakers use Strong Adjectives to express intensity. If you want to sound more professional and fluent, swap these out today

🇺🇸 FOR ENGLISH LEARNERS:
❌ Instead of: "Very tired" -> ✅ Say: "Exhausted"
❌ Instead of: "Very happy" -> ✅ Say: "Thrilled"
❌ Instead of: "Very big" -> ✅ Say: "Massive" or "Huge"

🇪🇸 PARA ESTUDIANTES DE ESPAÑOL:
❌ En vez de: "Muy difícil" -> ✅ Di: "Complicadísimo" o "Un reto"
❌ En vez de: "Muy bueno" -> ✅ Di: "Excelente" o "Genial"
❌ En vez de: "Muy cansado" -> ✅ Di: "Agotado"

The Secret is this, using one strong word is always more powerful than using two weak ones.

CHALLENGE:

How are you feeling today? Don't say "Very good" or "Very bad." Use a Strong Adjective in the comments! I will go first:

Let’s be real for a second... what’s the ONE thing stopping you?

We have had an amazing first week back! We have covered common mistakes, "cheat code" filler words, and even some cool Netflix hacks.

But I want to make sure I am helping you with what YOU actually need.

Learning a language is a journey, but everyone’s "mountain" looks different. I want to know.

What is your biggest frustration with English or Spanish right now?
Is it...

1) Listening: "I understand text, but people speak too fast!"

2) Speaking: "I know the words, but I freeze when I open my mouth."

3) Grammar: "I keep getting tangled up in tenses and conjugations."

4) Time: "I want to learn, but I just can't find the time to study."

Drop the number (1, 2, 3, or 4) in the comments! I am going to use your answers to plan out next week’s lessons to make sure they are 100% relevant to you.

Let’s overcome these hurdles together! 🤝

POP QUIZ! Can you spot the mistake?

Let’s see how much you have been paying attention. One of these sentences is perfectly fine, and one of them is a common mistake that native speakers never make.

Can you tell which one is CORRECT?

Option A: "I have 25 years." 🎂
Option B: "I am 25 years old." 🎂

(Or for my Spanish learners...)

Option A: "Estoy de acuerdo." ✅
Option B: "Soy de acuerdo." ✅

HOW TO PLAY:

1) Write your answer (A or B in the comments!
2) Tag a friend who is also learning to see if they get it right.

I will be revealing the correct answers and WHY the other one is wrong in the comments in a few hours! 👇

My "Secret Weapon" for understanding native speakers (and it’s free!)

One of the biggest complaints some people have is: "I understand my teacher, but when I watch a movie or talk to a native, they speak way too fast!"

If that’s you, stop scrolling. I want to share a tool you can use.

It’s called Language Reactor (formerly Language Learning with Netflix).

What it does.

It’s a Chrome extension that supercharges your Netflix or YouTube. It gives you:

•Dual Subtitles: See the Spanish and English text at the exact same time.

•Hover to Translate: Not sure what a word means? Just hover your mouse over it.

•Save Phrases: Build your own vocabulary list while watching your favorite shows.

Why you should try It.

It turns chilling on the couch into an active learning session without it feeling like homework. You start to hear the rhythm of the language, not just the words.

YOUR TURN:

What is your favorite show or movie to watch in English or Spanish? Tell me in the comments, and I will tell you if it’s a good one for your level! 📺🍿

I wasn’t always "fluent." Honestly, I used to be terrified to speak. 🫣

If you see me today and think, "It’s easy for them, they are a teacher," I have a secret for you.

I remember in class, when I started learning Spanish language newly. I always had to calm my racing heart, when it was my turn to speak... I knew the grammar in my head, but my mouth just wouldn't work as good as what was in my head.

But I have learnt from my experienced that fluency is not about being perfect but being brave. I didn't become a Spanish tutor because I am a genius. I became a teacher because I found a way to bridge that gap between knowing the rules and actually speaking the language.

Now, my mission is to make sure you don't have to feel that same fear for as long as I did.

We are not just learning words here, we are building the confidence to be ourselves in a second language.

I want to get to know you better.
What is the 1 thing holding you back right now? Is it fear of making mistakes, grammar confusion, or just not having anyone to practice with?

Let me know below. I am reading every single comment today!

Do you want to sound fluent instantly? Use these "Cheat Codes"

What’s the biggest difference between a textbook and a native speaker? Filler words.

When a native speaker is thinking of what to say next, they don't just stay silent, they use fillers. If you use these, you will stop sounding like a robot and start sounding like you’ve lived in the country for years.

Save these for your next conversation!

🇺🇸 FOR ENGLISH LEARNERS (To sound more natural):
Instead of saying "Umm..." try:
1. “Actually..." (Actually, I think...)

2. “To be honest..." (To be honest, I'm not sure.)

3. “You know?" (It’s just a bit difficult, you know?)

🇪🇸 FOR SPANISH LEARNERS (Para sonar más natural):
Instead of "Este..." try

1. “A ver..." (Let’s see...)

2. “Bueno..." (Well...)

3. “O sea..." (I mean... / In other words...)

Pro Tip: Don't overthink them! Just sprinkle one into your next sentence and watch how much more confident you feel.

CHALLENGE

Pick ONE word from the list above and write a sentence using it in the comments. I’ll be hopping in to give you feedback on your usage!

STOP saying this! (It’s a dead giveaway you are using a translator )

We have all been there. You want to say something in your new language, you translate it literally in your head, and... the native speaker looks at you confused. 😅

Here is the 1 "False Friend" mistake I hear.

🇪🇸 For English speakers learning Spanish:
Don’t say: "Estoy embarazado/a" when you feel silly.

Why? Embarazada means PREGNANT. 🤰

To say you are embarrassed, use: "Siento vergüenza" or "Me da corte."

🇺🇸 For Spanish speakers learning English:
Don’t say: "I need to support my boss." when you mean you can’t stand them.

Why? Soportar in Spanish means "to tolerate/endure," but Support in English means TO HELP. 🤝

To say you can’t stand someone, use: "I can't stand/put up with my boss."

The Lesson is this, translating word for word is a trap! To speak like a native, you have to learn the context, not just the dictionary definition.

QUIZ TIME:
Do you know any other "False Friends" (words that look the same but have different meanings)?

Drop one in the comments and let’s see who gets caught out!
