Pearls for my jewelry brought me to Ise-Shima, but I left with something far more valuable.

In coastal Japan, a group of women is still keeping an ancient tradition alive.

For over 2000 years, the remarkable Ama’s dive up to 20 meters deep to harvest abalone, seaweed and pearls with nothing but a knife, a rope and a single breath.

Traditionally, this work was done by women because they were believed to conserve body heat better in cold water.

Some Ama still dive well into their 70s and 80s.

More than a profession, Ama diving is a story of resilience, tradition and profound connection to the ocean.

I was lucky to live this experience in Ise-Shima on my quest for pearls for my jewelry making (reel to come soon) … at the end, I left with something far more valuable than pearls: a life lesson.
