Folia earrings process ✨
Ever wondered how a pair of earrings goes from a simple idea to a finished piece? Here’s a little look behind the scenes of how the Folia earrings came to life.
Working on new earring shapes is always really fun for me, and it’s very much a hands-on process of experimenting with different proportions, details, and materials. One of the main challenges when creating earrings from stainless steel sheet is shaping a flat 2D material into a 3D form while still keeping it timeless, minimal, and not too heavy.
✂️ I always start with a piece of leftover paper and a pair of scissors. By cutting out different shapes, the idea begins to develop, and it’s so easy to place the form next to my face to see how it might look when worn — a quick but very direct process.
💻 When I have a rough paper shape, I move to Adobe Illustrator to refine it and create several variations in size and proportions. Then I print out some of the best options and cut them out of paper again.
🧩 Once I have two or three strong sample candidates, my partner Martin helps make 3D-printed prototypes based on my .ai drawings. I can fold and bend the printed samples with heat, which gives a similar feeling to working with stainless steel. I usually make small adjustments at this stage — for example, with the Folia earrings I needed to consider how the weight is distributed when worn.
📏 Only at this point do I decide on the final size of the earring. For Folia, I really felt that both a mini and a bold version were needed! (Or maybe I just couldn’t decide which one was better.)
⚙️ Last but not least, I order laser-cut 1 mm stainless steel prototypes. After bending and polishing them, I can be sure the design meets my criteria in terms of both aesthetics and ethics.
