The lab-grown diamond market is growing fast.
More customers, especially the younger generations, are shifting toward lab-grown diamonds because they offer ethical sourcing, lower environmental impact, and better value per carat compared to mined diamonds.
GIA (Gemological Institute of America), one of the most respected labs in gem grading, is changing how it grades lab-grown diamonds.
As of October 2025, GIA will stop using the classic 4Cs (color & clarity) for lab-grown stones, and instead classify lab-grown diamonds into two tiers:
Premium or Standard, based on combined factors (color, clarity, finish). If a stone doesn’t meet the minimum (for “Standard”), it won’t receive a GIA designation.
GIA believes this will help customers better understand the differences in origin (natural vs lab), reduce confusion, and make the grading/reporting more appropriate for manufactured stones.
What does this mean for you:
Simpler grading makes it easier for you to understand what you’re getting without needing to interpret subtle differences in clarity/color that are less variable in lab stones.
