Asao Tokolo, a Japanese artist and architect born in 1969, designed the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic emblems, named "Harmonised Chequered Emblem." Featuring an indigo-blue ichimatsu moyo pattern from the Edo period, the design uses three rectangular shapes to represent unity in diversity. Chosen through a 2016 public competition following a plagiarism controversy, Tokolo’s emblem reflects his signature geometric style and emphasis on connection.
