Phantom der Z***e – a project completed ten years later.

On March 5 and 6, completed a solo ascent of the route “Phantom der Z***e” on the north face of Cima Grande. First climbed by Christoph Hainz and Kurt Astner in 1995, the line is considered one of the more demanding and aesthetically striking routes on this iconic wall.

In winter conditions, with around 10 cm of fresh snow and temperatures around −5 °C, Simon worked his way up the wall alone.

The route involves mandatory climbing up to 7a+. In the upper part of the wall, less compact rock, snow-covered sections and protection with removable gear require experience and careful route-finding.

After a bivouac on the Hasse/Brandler ledge, he continued the next day.

At the Ringband, full winter conditions prevailed. From there he continued using crampons and an ice tools. The traverse of the Ringband proved particularly time-consuming, as the entire ledge had to be protected with trad gear.

Shortly before 4 pm, he reached the summit of Cima Grande, completing a project he had first attempted ten years earlier.

“Though I grew up in a climbing family, swimming was my first love for much of my childhood.
Then, five years ago, everything changed! I discovered my true passion: climbing and the mountains.
Competitions keep me busy at the moment, but you’ll still find me at the crag, squeezing in and soaking every possible day on the rock. Excited to start this journey with Edelrid!”
