A TOUCH OF THE UNEXPECTED THIS HALLOWEEN

With its distinctive aesthetic and striking split design, this KAWS “Original Fake Companion” blurs the line between playful character design and something more unsettling. Released by Medicom Toy in 2006, it is a limited edition of only 500 examples worldwide and comes complete with its box and packaging.

KAWS, the pseudonym of American artist Brian Donnelly, began as a graffiti artist in the 1990s before becoming one of the most influential names in contemporary art and collectible design. His Companion character, with its signature crossed-out eyes, has become an icon of modern pop culture. Early editions like this one from 2006 are particularly sought after by collectors.

Available in our upcoming auction on the 28th of November.

WHEN ART MEETS STRATEGY

An exceptional bronze chess set by renowned German artist Paul Wunderlich, conceived in his distinctive, imaginative visual language. Cast by Lunt in 1978–1983 for Edition Volker Huber, Offenbach am Main, the set comprises 32 bronze chess pieces with brown or black patina, reflecting Wunderlich’s fascination with mythology, symbolism and the human form.

The sculptural figures draw inspiration from the artist’s rich mythological imagery: the queen is modelled after Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, while the king is depicted as the Minotaur. The elongated knight evokes the winged sandals of Hermes, messenger of the gods. Each piece is a miniature work of art, combining expressive forms with a striking sculptural presence.
Available in our upcoming auction on the 28th of November.

PART 2 - RESERVING ART. PROTECTING HISTORY.

The conservation and restoration of a work of art require far more than technical skill. They demand experience, precision and a deep understanding of the artwork itself.
In this Reel, art expert Mr. Kerle explains why professional conservation can play such an important role in preserving an artwork’s condition and where appropriate, safeguarding its long-term value.
A carefully executed restoration is not about changing a work of art: it is about protecting what is already there. Every decision, from the choice of materials to the extent of an intervention, must be carefully considered and professionally documented.
For collectors and the art market alike, responsible conservation means respecting the original work while ensuring that it can be preserved for future generations.
Because when it comes to fine art, preservation is part of its legacy.

SOME ICONS ARE SIMPLY IMPOSSIBLE TO CHOOSE BETWEEN

Join our handbag expert Marie Friedrich as she explores a selection of exceptional Hermès bags in this special edition of “This or That”.
And just when you think you’ve seen it all, there’s one final reveal: the rare Hermès bag “Le Sac Initiale”, soon to be offered in our upcoming November auction.

Designed under Martin Margiela, who served as creative director at Hermès from 1997 to 2003, the bag was introduced in the Autumn/Winter 2002 collection. At 32 x 23 x 17 cm, it takes its proportions from the classic Kelly 32, yet translates the house’s most famous silhouette into Margiela’s own language.

With an exterior entirely free of hardware and logos, it embodies the quiet, discreet luxury that defined his vision for the house. Its asymmetric shoulder straps interlace to form an “H”, the only signature it needs – and this could be one reason why the bag got its name. “Le Sac Initiale” was reportedly produced for only a short time, until around 2004, which makes it a rarity today.

Take your opportunity to own a rare piece of fashion history on November 27!

This work, a colour lithograph dating to 1926/27, exemplifies his unmistakable approach to figure and form.

PART 1 - WHEN RESTORATION BECOMES A PART OF AN ARTWORKS JOURNEY

Before a work of art can enter the auction market, it may sometimes require careful conservation or restoration. But when it comes to valuable works, every intervention matters.
In this Reel, art expert Mr. Kerle explains how restoration can be approached professionally: from assessing the artwork’s condition to determining whether an intervention is necessary, appropriate and carried out to the highest professional standards.
The goal is not to make a work of art “new again.” It is about preserving its integrity, respecting its history, and ensuring that any necessary intervention is carried out with the utmost care and expertise.
Because in the world of fine art, restoration is not simply a technical process. It is a responsibility.
