Wilfried is our Head Watchmaker for already 18 years 😎 he is sharing with us his thoughts 💭 about our beloved Manufature ! How would you describe Vulcain’s DNA in three words?
I would say classicism, strong personality, and a true professional identity. These are values that have defined Vulcain for decades and continue to guide everything we do.
Which aspect of Vulcain’s heritage are you most proud of?
What makes me most proud is our respect for values and the transmission of know-how from generation to generation — from owners and master watchmakers to operators and artisans. The fact that Vulcain is still a manufacture today is extremely meaningful. Our past is not something we look at with nostalgia; it’s something we use to build the future.
From a watchmaker’s perspective, why is the alarm complication so special?
The Vulcain alarm is unique because it uses two independent barrels and a winding direction that is the reverse of most calibres. It also delivers up to 1,200 vibrations in just 20 seconds, reaching around 79 decibels. It’s a complication that is technically complex, yet remarkably simple in its construction — which is what makes it so fascinating.
What excites you most about Vulcain’s current developments?
We are constantly improving and evolving. We are technically redefining our iconic models to meet modern NIHS standards, while carefully preserving their original design. At the same time, we are exploring new materials, new metals, and new manufacturing methods, which opens many creative possibilities. Do you have a favorite watch in the current collection?
Two, actually. The Nautical, for its history, complexity, and strong design. And the Skindiver, for its comfort, balanced proportions.
What continues to motivate you after all these years? Seeing my colleagues every morning. Having the privilege to work in a true manufacture. The diversity of our work, the opportunity to keep learning, the promise of future projects, and the satisfaction of our clients. Above all, it’s the desire to respect and preserve our savoir-faire.
