Moïse Kisling
“Anémones”, 1932
Oiil on canvas, 55 × 38 cm.

A floral poem in oil – “Anémones” by Moïse Kisling radiates timeless elegance. Born in Kraków, the artist is associated with the École de Paris and was known for his clearly composed, richly coloured still lifes in which every petal appears meticulously modelled.

At this year’s autumn auction, this subtle masterpiece was sold for a hammer price of CHF 50,000.

Lot 157 – At auction upcoming Friday, November 7th:

GERTSCH, FRANZ (1930 - 2022)
"Schwarzwasser II" (Detail 2). 1994.
Wood cut,
108x136 cm (BG)

The present work is an excerpt (Detail 2) from the right panel of Franz Gertsch’s large-format woodcut Schwarzwasser II, created in 1993/94. By selecting excerpts, the Bernese artist fragmented his monumental prints into more accessible formats. In this composition, he dealt with the theme of water — specifically with the river called Schwarzwasser, which flows near his former home and studio in Rüschegg. Equipped with a Hasselblad camera 12, the artist had already taken his first photographs of the Schwarzwasser in 1991, which he later projected onto his studio wall as image templates.

According to Albrecht Gertsch, to whom we express our gratitude for his information, the offered work is the only known print of this excerpt, and thus constitutes a rarity in Gertsch’s printmaking oeuvre.

Lot 354
PAUL GAUGUIN (1848–1903)
"Rue du village". 1873
Huile sur toile,
41x31 cm

The creative phase of the 1870s marked the beginning of Paul Gauguin's artistic career, in which he initially orientated himself towards the techniques and themes of Impressionism. Only one year before the present work was created, the artist was still working at the stock exchange. The approach to the Impressionist idea and style is already evident in the depiction of the sky and the path.

SOLD on May 9th for CHF 150,000.

Don’t miss our Swiss Art Auction tonight!

Lot 153
VERENA LOEWENSBERG (1912 Zürich 1986)
Untitled, 1975
Oil on canvas,
60x60 cm
CR No. 430

Verena Loewensberg was, alongside Max Bill, Richard Paul Lohse, and Camille Graeser, part of the core group of the “Zürcher Konkreten”, whose art, according to Bill, was “the pure expression of harmonious measure and law.” As the only woman in the quartet, she represented a somewhat less dogmatic interpretation of the concrete-constructive framework.

In the 1970s, Verena Loewensberg focused thematically on horizontal stripes, which—due to their finely nuanced, rhythmic composition and atmospheric use of color—appear almost lyrical.

One of our highlights of tomorrow's international art auction:

LOT 426
PIERRE ALECHINSKY (Bruxelles 1927)
"Lampe baladeuse". 1980
Acrylic on paper, on canvas,
65x103 cm

The connection between painting and writing is central to Alechinsky's compositions, not only because of the materiality of the line but also due to the symbolic aspect of the gesture. To this day, the work of the naturalized Frenchman remains lyrical, full of imagination and cultural allusions, oscillating between European and Asian forms of expression.

"Lampe baladeuse”, an expressive composition with a graphically ornate subject on a cobalt blue background, was created shortly before Pierre Alechinsky became professor of painting at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
