ORANGE, WITH A REASON.

In the 1960s and 1970s, offshore exploration was moving into deeper waters. Divers working on oil and gas installations had to operate for long periods at depths where conventional diving techniques reached their limits.

This created a new challenge: how could humans live and work safely under extreme pressure — and return safely to the surface?

Professor Albert A. Bühlmann’s research in Zurich was at the heart of answering that question. His work on breathing gases, saturation diving and decompression helped establish the scientific foundations needed for increasingly deep and prolonged underwater operations.

The Capshell experiments were part of this pioneering era of hyperbaric research. Divers lived and worked under simulated pressure, allowing Bühlmann and his team to study how the human body absorbed and released inert gases and to develop safer decompression procedures.

The Capshell chamber used for these experiments was painted a distinctive orange.

More than half a century later, that colour became the inspiration for the dial of the Bühlmann Decompression 02 First Edition Orange.

500 METERS. ZURICH, 1981.

In 1981, a simulated dive to 500 meters was conducted in the pressure chamber of the University Hospital of Zurich as part of the pioneering work that pushed the understanding of human physiology, decompression and extreme depth further than ever before.

The original dive records shown here document that remarkable experiment: depth, gas mixtures, decompression stages and the names of the men who took part.

More than four decades later, that same spirit of Swiss research and uncompromising dive safety lives on in the Bühlmann Decompression 02.

Presented at Geneva Watch Days 2026, the Alpina × Watch Angels Startimer Pilot Chronograph IFR brings together something we believe strongly in: real function and contemporary style. A pilot’s watch should do more than look like an instrument.

The IFR was designed around a real aviation function: helping pilots determine the correct holding-pattern entry: Direct, Teardrop or Parallel; simply and quickly. Two inputs: Heading + inbound course.

The watch translates them mechanically into the information needed to execute the entry without modifying the movement, but through an ingenious interaction between bezel and the turning rehaut. And yet, function does not have to look purely technical.

WHY IS COMING UP MORE COMPLICATED THAN GOING DOWN?

Going down is relatively simple: pressure increases.

Coming back up is where things become complicated.

During a dive, increased pressure causes inert gases, principally nitrogen, to dissolve into the body's tissues. The deeper and longer the dive, the more gas can be absorbed.

During ascent, pressure decreases and that gas needs to leave the tissues again. If the change happens too quickly, bubbles can form in the body.

That is why decompression science is fundamentally about the journey back.

Going deep is one challenge.
Coming back safely is the science.
