WHY DOES PRESSURE STILL MATTER AFTER YOU LEAVE THE WATER?

The dive may be over.

The decompression process isn't necessarily.

After surfacing, the body can continue eliminating inert gas accumulated during the dive. This is why what happens next matters too.

And it explains one particularly important rule for divers:

Don't fly too soon after diving.

An aircraft cabin is pressurised — but generally to a pressure lower than at sea level. Flying therefore exposes the body to another reduction in ambient pressure while residual inert gas may still be present.

You left the ocean.

But you haven't necessarily left decompression behind.

WHY IS COMING UP MORE COMPLICATED THAN GOING DOWN?

Going down is relatively simple: pressure increases.

Coming back up is where things become complicated.

During a dive, increased pressure causes inert gases, principally nitrogen, to dissolve into the body's tissues. The deeper and longer the dive, the more gas can be absorbed.

During ascent, pressure decreases and that gas needs to leave the tissues again. If the change happens too quickly, bubbles can form in the body.

That is why decompression science is fundamentally about the journey back.

Going deep is one challenge.
Coming back safely is the science.

I would like to share my short intro speech on occasion of the screening of the Swiss première of the documentary "The Quest for the Perfect Algorithm" at TSK in Bern.

"Good evening everyone,

First of all, thank you all for being here tonight. It is wonderful to see so many people who share a passion for diving, watches, and the stories behind them.

A special thank you to TSK and the entire team for hosting this evening and for their support of independent watchmaking and the diving community.

I would also like to thank Thomas Bühlmann for joining us tonight. Thomas not only carries the family name, but also the responsibility and passion of preserving and sharing the extraordinary legacy of his father, Professor Albert A. Bühlmann.

When we started Bühlmann Watches, we quickly realized that we were not simply creating another dive watch. Behind the name was a story that deserved to be told.

Professor Bühlmann's work changed diving forever. Millions of divers around the world, often without knowing it, rely on principles that originated from his research. Yet outside the diving world, very few people know the man behind the algorithms.

That is why we made this documentary.

Not to look back with nostalgia, but to preserve a remarkable Swiss scientific legacy and to share the values behind it: curiosity, precision, humility, and the relentless pursuit of truth.

And the watch itself follows the same philosophy.

We did not create it to compete with dive computers. We created it as a tribute to this legacy and as a mechanical expression of decompression science, something that allows enthusiasts and divers alike to carry a piece of that history on their wrist.

Tonight is therefore not really about a watch.

It is about a man, a family, a scientific achievement, and a passion that continues to inspire us.

Thank you again for joining us, and I hope you enjoy the film".

Where diving science continues.

The legacy of Dr. Albert A. Bühlmann is not confined to history.

It lives on through the people and institutions that continue to advance diving science, improve diver safety and expand our understanding of decompression.

This is why our partnerships matter.

DAN Europe advances diver safety through research, education and prevention. By collecting and analysing diving data from around the world, it contributes to the development and validation of the next generation of decompression science.

EUBS50 – European Underwater and Baromedical Society brings together the world's leading researchers and physicians in diving and hyperbaric medicine, providing the scientific forum where new discoveries are shared, challenged and transformed into future knowledge.

CMAS Switzerland connects this scientific heritage with the diving community through education, training and responsible exploration, helping translate scientific knowledge into everyday diving practice.

At Bühlmann, our role is unique.

We preserve the legacy of Dr. Albert A. Bühlmann while translating today's and tomorrow's decompression science into horological mechanics.

Through Swiss watchmaking, we transform scientific principles into functional mechanical instruments, connecting one of diving's greatest scientific achievements with the divers of today and tomorrow.

These partnerships are not about sponsorship.

They are about ensuring that research continues, knowledge is shared, science reaches divers, and one of the greatest legacies in the history of diving continues to evolve.

Where diving science continues.

Bühlmann Official Watch of EUBS50.

For the past 50 years, the European Underwater and Baromedical Society (EUBS) has brought together physicians, researchers and diving professionals united by a common purpose: advancing diving medicine and improving dive safety.

Through research, collaboration and the exchange of knowledge, EUBS has helped shape many of the scientific advances that divers around the world benefit from today.

Bühlmann Watches is proud to support EUBS50, as EUBS celebrates its 50th anniversary in Geneva.

For us, this collaboration is far more than a celebration of Dr. Albert A. Bühlmann's extraordinary scientific legacy.

It is the beginning of a long-term relationship with the scientific community that continues to advance decompression research, hyperbaric medicine and diver safety.

Our ambition is clear: to ensure that future Bühlmann watches continue to evolve alongside science, learning from and collaborating with the physicians, researchers and diving professionals who shape the future of diving.

A New Colour. The Same Saga.

The story of the Bühlmann Decompression 02 continues.

Following the release of our documentary, The Quest for the Perfect Algorithm (link in bio), which retraces the life and work of Dr. Albert A. Bühlmann and his lasting impact on modern diving, we are pleased to introduce a new expression of the Decompression 02.

Meet the Decompression 02 First Edition Orange.

Produced in a strictly limited series of only 20 individually numbered pieces, this edition combines the engineering philosophy of the Decompression 02 with one of diving's most iconic colours.

Orange has long been associated with the underwater world. Highly visible and immediately recognisable, it has been used for decades on professional diving equipment where clarity matters most. It is a colour that naturally belongs beneath the surface.

For the First Edition Orange, the high contrast matt orange dial is combined with the signature matt black decompression scale, creating a bold yet functional contrast while preserving the distinctive identity of the Decompression 02.

Behind the colour remains exactly the same watch that has attracted divers, collectors and scientists alike: a mechanical tribute to Dr. Albert A. Bühlmann's pioneering decompression research, featuring the unique dual-bezel system, rotating decompression disc, Fly-No-Fly indicator and Swiss automatic movement.

Only 20 pieces will ever be produced.

Each watch is individually engraved and numbered XX/20, making this one of the rarest Bühlmann Watches created.

The First Edition Orange is a new celebration of the journey the Decompression 02 has taken, from the remarkable scientific legacy of Dr. Bühlmann, to the documentary that brought his story to a wider audience, and now to a new chapter expressed through a colour that has always been part of the history of diving.

Just twenty watches for those who appreciate authentic stories, meaningful engineering and true rarity.

The Bühlmann Decompression 02 First Edition Orange is now available.
