Wait... What???
New study alert: Honey bees might be the bullies of the flower patch.

Researchers found honey bees frequently chase off and displace native bumblebees and solitary pollinators when competing for floral resources.
As temperatures climb, that competitive advantage only grows. It's a great reminder of why planting diverse, bee-friendly gardens is essential for helping wild species thrive alongside managed colonies.

So you're finally going to take the plunge and start beekeeping? Before your first nuc arrives next spring, here are a few golden rules I've learned along the way:

- Don't start with just one hive. Always run at least two. If something goes sideways, having a strong colony to pull resources or frames from is an absolute lifesaver.
- Focus on mite management, not honey. Your number one goal for year one isn't a bumper harvest of liquid gold—it's getting your bees through the winter alive. Master your varroa counts early.
- Join a local or online club or community. Books and YouTube are great, but nothing beats local mentorship from beekeepers who actually know our regional weather patterns and nectar flows.

Welcome to the wonderful, humbling world of apiculture! What's the biggest question on your mind as you plan your first yard? And do any of you experienced beekeepers have your own bits of advice?

Have you folks been having problems with varroa mites? For beekeepers, staying ahead of Varroa mites is a serious problem, especially with increasing reports of resistance to conventional treatments like amitraz and synthetic pyrethroids.

I read an article recently about some interesting progress is finally making its way into the field with new modes of action:

Reproductive Disruption: Treatments like Norroa take a completely different route than the standard chemical approach. Instead of targeting the nervous system, it focuses on interrupting mite reproductive signalling inside capped brood cells, preventing foundress mites from successfully producing viable offspring.

Extended-Release Oxalic Acid: Formulations like VarroxSan are expanding the toolbox by providing a steady, continuous low dose of oxalic acid over time. This helps maintain steady suppression across entire brood cycles without requiring the narrow temperature windows or frequent applications of traditional vapour or dribble treatments.

Having viable options that target mite biology differently is important for long-term pest management. It's great to see the science catching up to the challenges beekeepers are facing.

For those of you having mite problems, what are your thoughts about this? Let us know.

Did you know that beekeeping is being used as a powerful therapeutic tool for young people and veterans navigating mental health challenges?

Working with a hive requires absolute focus, steady breathing, and calm energy, forcing you to slow down, quiet an overactive mind, and stay entirely in the present moment. Combined with the deep sense of purpose that comes from caring for a living colony, it offers an incredible, grounding path toward healing and confidence.

Have you ever heard of therapeutic beekeeping, or do you have any personal experience with apiary programs making a difference to you or anyone you know?

Have any of you heard about this?

Police in northern Queensland, Australia, are investigating after professional thieves targeted commercial apiaries, executing a precise operation to steal entire colonies—carefully swapping out brood frames and leaving empty boxes behind so the loss wasn't immediately noticed.

While the scale of the theft is staggering, the real sting is felt by local agriculture. Pollination is the unsung engine of our food supply. Losing nearly a million specialized, working bees right ahead of critical crop pollination cycles deals a severe blow to local growers who rely on these colonies for fruit, nut, and vegetable yields. It's a stark reminder of just how vital—and vulnerable—our local pollinators truly are.

Have you ever thought about how much our food systems depend on these tiny, hardworking insects?

Big trade news for Canadian beekeepers:

The US recently slapped a steep 50% tariff on Canadian natural honey as part of an escalating broader trade dispute, essentially shutting down our biggest export market overnight.

Here is what is happening:
Exports have been drastically reduced or halted: With thin margins on bulk honey, a 50% tariff makes Canadian honey uncompetitive south of the border. US buyers immediately paused orders. Zero US producer push: American beekeepers didn't ask for this… US packers actually rely on Canada’s clean, high-grade white honey for blending.

Canadian counter-tariffs: Ottawa retaliated with a matching 50% duty on incoming US honey, but because we export far more than we import, the domestic sector still faces the squeeze.

While a lighter 2026 domestic harvest has cushioned the blow for now, long-term tariffs will put serious pressure on Canadian commercial apiaries. Now more than ever, make sure to check your labels and support your local Canadian beekeepers!

Are you a beekeeper who has been personally impacted by this? Have you sought other markets? Please let us know your story!

Great news for pollinator health in Canada!

The University of Guelph just opened its new Luckevich Pinchin Honey Bee Research Centre, and it’s a massive win for beekeepers and researchers alike.

Tucked right next to the arboretum, the space works as a true living lab. It combines advanced research tackling big threats like the Varroa mite with hands-on classrooms, community workshops, and a working apiary where visitors can watch honey extraction happen in real time.

With honey bees playing such a massive role in our food security, seeing this kind of dedicated investment in apiculture research is incredible to watch.

There is also ongoing research at Dal, Acadia and MSVU. Have you ever visited a working research yard? I'd love to hear about it below!
