Posted • The Mohs Hardness Scale operates on a simple principle: a material can scratch any other material that is softer than itself and be scratched by any material that is harder. Each of the ten minerals chosen by Friedrich Mohs represents a specific hardness level, assigned a number from 1 (softest) to 10 (hardest).

To determine the hardness of an unknown specimen, one attempts to scratch it using these reference minerals — or alternatively, tests whether it can scratch them. For instance, if a sample is scratched by quartz (hardness 7) but not by orthoclase feldspar (hardness 6), its hardness lies between those two values. This method is particularly useful in field settings, where advanced testing equipment is not available.

It’s important to note that the Mohs scale is ordinal, not linear. The increase in hardness from one number to the next is not uniform. Diamond (10), for example, is exponentially harder than corundum (9), despite being only one step higher on the scale. As such, while the scale is excellent for quick comparisons and identification, it does not reflect absolute hardness values.
