The birthstone for May - emerald! Part of the beryl family of minerals, emeralds are known for their vibrant green colour, caused by chromium and vanadium in their atomic structure.
Natural emeralds commonly contain a significant amount of inclusions, sometimes referred to as “jardin” (French for garden). While inclusions usually and significantly decrease the value of more typically clear gemstones, inclusions in emeralds are common and well-accepted in the industry. Finding emeralds without visible inclusions can be very difficult, and these stones sell for very high premiums.
To help mitigate the look of the inclusions, emeralds are almost always oil treated. This oil fills the inclusions/cracks in the emerald, improving its appearance. For this reason, emeralds cannot be cleaned in an ultrasonic bath, and one should avoid contact with solvents or detergents when wearing them to preserve the oil treatment.
Additionally, due to the inclusions and emerald’s hardness of 7.5-8, care should be taken when wearing them, especially on a ring or bracelet.
