What is a Biwa pearl?

Biwa pearls are freshwater pearls loved for their long, slender and beautifully irregular shapes.

Their name comes from Lake Biwa in Japan, famous for its freshwater pearls. Today, “Biwa” is often used to describe pearls with this distinctive elongated shape.
