Olivine forms deep in the mantle and is one of the rare minerals that actually makes it to the surface 👀 Most gemstones are formed in the Earth's crust.
When volcanoes erupt, magma carries these pre-formed crystals up!🌋
Even though it’s not super hard, olivine survives the ride because it’s already stable at very high temperatures (because of the heat in the mantle) and travels quickly in molten rock 🪨
Fun fact: gem-quality olivine (peridot) is one of the only gemstones that comes in just one color: green ✨💚
