Portugal is the world’s leading producer and exporter of cork, accounting for around 50% of global cork production. Cork oak trees can live for over 200 years and are first harvested at around 25 years old.
Subsequent harvests occur every 9-12 years, with no harm to the tree, as only the outer bark is stripped (with special tools). This process supports biodiversity by maintaining the delicate balance of the ecosystems where cork forests, or montados, exist.
