Dave Armshaw

Dave Armshaw Dave Armshaw specialises in creating functional art Two of his art knives won provincial honours and were displayed at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.

Over the past 30 years, Dave has combined his interests and skills in crafting wood, metal and stone into functional pieces of art. In the 1980s, Dave studied with Paul Burdette, honing his carving skills under the Canadian master's tutelage. Dave's carved furniture and fine joinery were highlighted in the Fergus Elora Arts Guild Studio Tour for several years. Dave's reputation for precision work

led to commissions to design, create and install fine cabinets in the galleys of luxury pleasure craft. A grateful member of the Four Directions Lodge in Southern ON, Dave was honoured to be asked to create prayer pipes and drums as gifts for some of this country's valued First Nations Shamans. Wanting to expand his skill set, Dave studied jewelry making at the Nova Scotia Centre for Craft and Design, later teaching tool making courses for jewelers at the Centre. It is during this time that the work of local knifemaker and goldsmith Don Bell, inspired Dave and he was accepted into the Nova Scotia Metal Arts Guild. Recently Dave is enjoying incorporating modern technologies into his designs. The whimsy of the Steampunk aesthetic coupled with the need for the pieces to be of 21st century functionality is a challenge that has caught Dave's interest.
