🍂 Fall in the Kootenays: A Season of Change

As the leaves change colour and the temperatures begin to drop, our forests are preparing for another season.

While the growing season may be winding down, the work of caring for our forests never stops. Responsible forest management is a year-round commitment. From planning and harvesting to reforestation and monitoring, every season plays a role in supporting healthy, resilient forests for future generations.

We're proud to work in the forests of the West Kootenays and to call this beautiful region home. What's your favourite part about this season? 🍁

🌲♻️ Turning wood waste into opportunity!

What might look like an ordinary pile of wood fibre represents an important opportunity to make better use of our forest resources. 🌿

Through funding from the Forest Enhancement Society of BC (FESBC), Mercer Celgar in Castlegar has supported the recovery of wood fibre that might otherwise be left behind or burned in slash piles. 🪵

🏭 Mercer Celgar is a local pulp mill that transforms wood fibre into pulp used to manufacture everyday products like paper, tissue and packaging. The mill also uses wood byproducts to generate renewable energy, demonstrating how different parts of a tree can serve different purposes.

🚛 By helping make the collection and transportation of this material more economically feasible, the program allows valuable fibre to be put to use in pulp production instead of going to waste.

🌱We also find value in the byproducts of our operations, selling materials for landscaping and other practical uses. From wood fibre destined for pulp production to materials that find new life in gardens and landscapes, it's all part of making the most of our resources.

🤝 Through partnerships, innovative practices and a commitment to reducing waste, we're helping ensure more of every harvested tree is put to good use.

🌲 Customer Highlight: Savona Specialty Plywood

Ever wonder where our veneer goes once it leaves the mill in Fruitvale?

We’re proud to work with Canadian companies that help add value to BC-grown wood right here in our province. One of those customers is Savona Specialty Plywood, located in BC’s Interior.

Savona’s products have a long history in the province, including use on recognizable projects like Canada Place in Vancouver. 🏗️ Their specialty panels are engineered to create the forms used when pouring concrete for major construction projects.

Partnerships like this help support local jobs, Canadian manufacturing and a strong forest-products sector here at home.

We’re proud to be part of a value-added BC forestry supply chain.

On National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we take time to reflect, listen and learn.

At ATCO, we stand with our Indigenous friends, partners and colleagues, recognizing the strength of Indigenous cultures, communities and the important contributions they continue to make.

Reconciliation is an ongoing journey. Today, we encourage everyone to take time to learn, have meaningful conversations and consider the role each of us can play in building stronger relationships and supporting healing in our communities.

🌲 It’s National Forest Week!

From seedling to finished wood product, everything we do at ATCO Wood Products begins in the forest.

This week is an opportunity to recognize the forests that support our environment, our communities and an industry that provides jobs for thousands of British Columbians.

We’re proud to be part of that story. We source wood from sustainably managed forests, support forest regeneration and work to make the most of this incredible renewable resource.

This year’s National Forest Week theme, “Forest Pathways: Innovation and Sustainability,” also speaks to where our industry is headed. As forestry continues to evolve, innovation helps us find smarter ways to use our resources, reduce waste and build a strong future for forestry in BC.

From the forest to our mill in Fruitvale and beyond, we’re proud to be part of an industry rooted right here in British Columbia. 🌲

When you support local industry, the impact stays local. 🌲

ATCO Wood Products has been part of the West Kootenay community for generations, and that means the work we do here reaches well beyond our mill.

We proudly employ 80+ team members with family-supporting wages and partner with 250+ BC businesses every year. We’ve also donated $500,000+ to local organizations, keeping value right here in the Kootenays.

Those numbers represent local families, businesses, organizations and communities.

It’s one more reason we’re proud to call the West Kootenays home. 🌲
