One month from today, these 2 magnificent beasts will turn 15 years old. Since theyโre rescues, I never really knew their true birthday, but I chose June 24th because our vet said they were between 3 and 4 months old when they came to me as fosters in October of 2011.
I wasnโt looking for a dog.. or two dogs. I had a busy life didnโt think the timing was right for me. It turns out when hundreds of dogs are rescued from puppy mills, it can take the good people at the SPCAs (the NBSPCA in our case) several months to get them all fixed and ready for adoption. It wasnโt until February 14th that Frank and Floyd were neutered (ironically on Valentineโs Day.. sorry boys ๐) and ready to be adopted. When I spoke to the person in the phone at the FSPCA that day, she offered me a BOGO deal in hopes Iโd adopt both. So I basically purchased my best friend and got a second, equally awesome best friend for free ๐
Within a couple of months, I quit both of my jobs and started working from homeโฆ making jewellery. These boys were not the confident and happy dogs some of you have gotten to know in the years since. They were terrified of everything, even their own shadows (literally). They were afraid of grass, humans, leashes, sounds of any kind, the broom, food.. everything terrified them.
So Jedi Jewellery was created so that I could spend my days at home with them. When I say theyโre Jedi Jewellery Mascots, I mean it!
Working from home helped me give them the life they needed so that they could grow into dogs who go EVERYWHERE and do anything. I see a lot of dogs kayaking with their humans these days but back when we 1st started (14 years ago), they were the only dogs youโd run into kayaking a lazy river in New Brunswick, and they were quite popular for it!
They still run and chase each other on the riverbanks, but a little more slowly and not for very long. They still get excited to do all the things they love to do, but their excitement is subdued because aches and pains tend to insist on it.
I feel their pain. Truly I do. Weโve grown old together ๐ค๐ค๐ค
