This ruby necklace will always be one of the most meaningful pieces I have ever created.
I made it in 1980, and it was the first piece I officially completed as a jeweler.
At that time, I was learning from talented goldsmiths and stone setters while spending every opportunity I could at the bench. I was fascinated by the craft and eager to learn everything possible about making fine jewelry.
After opening my first studio in Campbell River, British Columbia, I found myself creating many of my own parts and findings by hand. Those experiences taught me valuable skills and deepened my appreciation for quality craftsmanship.
When I look at this necklace today, I see more than gold, rubies, and diamonds. I see the beginning of a lifelong journey. I see years of learning, growth, dedication, and a passion for creating jewelry that will be treasured for generations.
Forty-five years later, this piece still brings back memories of where it all started, and I am grateful for every step of the journey that followed.
