When Jan Leuschner asked me if I could carve a Wout van Aert spoon for him, I thought, “Why not?”

Then he added, “But he has to be on a bicycle.”
That was my first “uh-oh” 😆

Soon everyone started saying that he obviously needed a helmet as well. And of course, the helmet had to be removable. At that point I thought, “Uh-oh… even more!” 😅

Then came the next suggestion: “Could he have interchangeable heads?”
That was definitely the moment for a proper “Oh dear…” 🫣

But I decided to give it a try anyway, and the result became this scoop, inspired by the track at the end of Paris–Roubaix, with Wout riding triumphantly across them. 👌🚴‍♂️🏆

Jan, I hope you enjoy this spoon. It was carved for you with a great deal of love and fun.

From a small piece of walnut that almost ended up on the scrap pile, I managed to carve this little cup.

The inspiration clearly came from Samuel Alexander , but I tried to add my own touch by giving the handle a character of its own.

Inspired by the beautiful spoons made by Christoph Westerburg and Lieuwe Jongsma , I wanted to try making a spoon with little feet as well. 😊 It turned into a regular eating spoon that can stand on its own little feet.

Just one more coat of oil, and it will be ready to join the collection. 😊

After inspiring workshop at , I just had to give it a try myself.

Luckily, I still had a cup that could use a bit of decoration, as well as a small mug that was asking for something extra. I’m really happy with how they turned out.

The inside of the cup will be finished with Ki urushi. The small mug is finished with red urushi combined with Ki urushi.

When I started carving my frog cup, I actually began with two blanks at the same time… because you never know. 😄

I finished this one as well. The wood was in even worse condition, so it needed quite a bit of urushi to bring it back to life. In the end, I’m really happy with how it turned out. 😊

When I asked Georg at Spoonburn if he’d be up for a trade, he handed me one of his iconic cups and said, “This one still needs a nice urushi finish.”

The moment I saw the beautiful texture, I knew I wanted to make it stand out. Instead of keeping the finish uniform, I decided to play with contrast by combining natural Ki urushi with a coloured urushi. The subtle shift in colour really brings the carved texture to life.

I’m genuinely happy with how it turned out—it highlights Georg craftsmanship while adding my own touch to the piece.

Georg , I’ll bring it to Spoontown so you can finally see it in person. I hope you’ll like what I did with it!

Under Jan Leuschner expert guidance at , we learned how to create smooth transitions in wood, with a particular focus on spoon forms. It’s something I find incredibly fascinating because it’s definitely not as easy as it looks.

To put what I learned into practice, I carved this spoon, combining the design of the practice stick we worked on with a functional spoon. And to stay true to Jan’s style, I just had to add some chip carving.

I hope I’ve made the master proud with this one! 😊 It was an absolute joy to carve, and I learned so much along the way.

Sometimes you come across projects you’re just not completely happy with. When that happens, I prefer to set them aside for a while and let the idea mature.

That was exactly the case with this kuksa. I wasn’t happy with the handle, and for a long time I couldn’t figure out how to improve it. In the end, I decided to carve an ivy leaf into it.

Ivy on walnut isn’t exactly botanically accurate, but I thought it made for a fun combination. 😊 The carving is quite delicate, but thanks to the strength of the walnut and a protective coat of urushi, it still feels solid and durable.

Sometimes a project just needs a little extra time before it finally feels right.

At , Avinoam Lebber gifted me what might be the most beautiful cup imaginable. He carved it from a piece of oak that he picked up at .

For the finish, he envisioned a golden effect on the inside. Since I had successfully achieved a similar effect with urushi on another piece before (thx Lieuwe Jongsma ), he thought this challenge would be right up my alley.

I’m incredibly happy with how it turned out. The golden interior really shines, while a simple oil finish on the outside was all that was needed to bring out the full beauty of the oak.

On Saturday I’ll be spending the day at ! Hopefully, I’ll get the chance to join workshop! As a warm-up, I carved this fork, based on one of Oren Hetzroni designs and combined with signature decorative style. I’m super happy with how it turned out. What do you think?
