Diamonds and Antwerp

Diamonds and Antwerp Diamonds and Antwerp, It's in our DnA! Diamonds and Antwerp: It’s in our DnA

Diamonds and Antwerp have been connected for more than 570 years. It’s in our DNA.

While the so-called golden age made the Antwerp diamond industry flourish, it was the craftsmanship of the diamantair that made Antwerp remain strong. Today the diamond industry and the city are inseparably connected. Diamonds are as much part of the DNA of the city as the city is part of the DNA of the diamantair. The non-stop investment in know-how and craftsmanship are the key to this success a

nd shows how hard work and creativity can be a life-long experience from generation to generation. People of Antwerp and people of the diamond industry share the same values of solidarity and support each other. The Antwerp diamond industry is a trendsetter across the globe and we aim to focus on innovation and contemporary ideas the next following 570 years, as we did the past 570 years. As a highly controlled sector it is our aim to be a role model globally as integrity is absolutely crucial in our industry. Quality always comes first and our quality standard has ensured that Antwerp’s diamonds are always a trusted choice. Our ambition is to maintain this quality standard in the future and to keep on putting the city of Antwerp in the spotlight worldwide. That is who we are. That is how people know us.

Today at Antwerp Central station, we launched a public awareness campaign to highlight the risk of being misled when buying a diamond jewel.

*The core issue?* Many consumers simply don’t know the difference between natural and synthetic diamonds.

*The risk?* Buying a synthetic diamond while paying the price of a natural one.

During the campaign, passers-by had the opportunity to have their jewelry scanned by an expert and discover what kind of “diamond” they actually own.

Because buying a diamond is never just another purchase. It’s often both an emotional and a financial investment and that’s why knowing what you’re buying matters.

Curious to see how it went? Watch the aftermovie of the campaign launch attached.

Following an in-depth presentation, we opened the floor to a roundtable discussion, where participants reflected on structural obstacles and identified practical steps the industry can take to create more inclusive workplaces. We are excited to use the tools of to support the industry in advancing this important topic.

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of welcoming the U.S. Ambassador to Belgium, , and his husband Bryan Eure to the Antwerp diamond district for an immersive introduction to the world of diamonds.

Through a focused presentation and hands-on diamond workshop, and visits to , the Antwerp Diamond Bourse, and Diamond Office, the Ambassador gained first-hand insight into the craftsmanship, expertise, and people that define our industry.

A mini-expo at our office, where Antwerp diamond companies showcased their spectacular stones, further illustrated Antwerp’s fully integrated diamond ecosystem.

The United States remains one of the most important markets for natural diamonds, and it was a privilege to present the skill, precision, and dedication that underpin every stone passing through our district. We exchanged views about the political and macro-economic context affecting the diamond industry, such as the G7 import ban on Russian diamonds and the importance of ensuring a level playing field.

Opportunities like these allow us to open our doors and share the full journey of a diamond, from trade and compliance to craftsmanship and innovation, all rooted in centuries of heritage.

“Diamonds are the ultimate status symbol, but are they really forever?”

That’s the question set out to answer when their team visited the Antwerp diamond district in November.

As one of the world’s leading news agencies, their presence in Antwerp speaks volumes. During their visit, they stepped inside , , First Element and , and even saw the largest black polished diamond in the world with their own eyes.

Antwerp once again proved why it remains the global reference point for diamonds, and we’re so grateful we got to show them exactly that.

Today and tomorrow, AWDC welcomes a high-level Angolan diamond delegation – led by Minister of Mineral Resources Diamantino Pedro Azevedo – to strengthen trade relations between Angola, a producer of premium rough diamonds, and Antwerp, the world’s most trusted and transparent diamond trading hub.

The ambition is clear: more Angolan rough diamonds traded via Antwerp – through strong collaboration and between both partners and resulting in a win-win. For Angola, Antwerp offers direct access to the world’s leading luxury and jewellery markets, where transparency, compliance and traceability matter more than ever. For Antwerp, it means better and faster access to high-quality Angolan production.

With Angola producing over USD 1.4 billion in rough diamonds in 2024 and firmly committing to transparency and international credibility, Antwerp is once again a natural partner. Today, 21% of Angola’s rough diamond production already flows directly through Antwerp – and this is just the beginning.

Stronger trade relationship create real value: economic value, reputational value and long-term value for the entire natural diamond industry.

Not everything that matters is visible at first glance. Like included diamonds, invisible illnesses may go unseen, but their impact is real.

That belief inspired our charity initiative in support of . Each year, .be picks a different social theme, and this year, they are focusing on people living with invisible illnesses, with all funds supporting related projects.

❄️ Last week, our community came together at a winter market in the Antwerp Diamond District. Proceeds from hot drinks, diamond books, tote bags, postcards, and our earlier postcard sale go directly to De Warmste Week.,

A warm thank you to everyone who stopped by, contributed, and helped make the invisible a little more visible. 💛 We’re happy to share that we raised an estimated amount of 1500 euros for this charity!

If you’re curious to know the grand total of the whole of De Warmste Week, tune in to VRT on December 24th for the big reveal! 🔥

On 1 January 2026, the final phase of sanctions regulations to ensure no rough or polished diamonds of Russian origin enter the EU goes into effect.

🔍 What this means for diamantaires: There is no obligation for diamond companies to use a digital traceability platform for the time being.

📄 What does change: From 2026, traders importing polished diamonds within scope must submit a Due Diligence Statement on Diamond Origin when importing through the Diamond Office.

As Europe’s diamond authority, AWDC helped shape this framework with clear, input on traceability, technology and real-world readiness.

We continue to advocate for clear EU rules, a single standard and consistent enforcement across all Member States. ‘Cause effective policy must also be workable.
