What you’re looking at: a piece of blue steel mounted in a lathe to be cut down to a total length of 5mm, and the largest diameter at 1.88mm with the smallest at 0.115 - all hand controlled 🫣

Not my usual step by step, but here is a snapshot of some key moments in a balance staff I made! Took me approximately an hour, and hoping to make some more this year to hone that skill a bit more 😃

The logic here is punching multiple holes around the bearing to ā€˜close’ the hole up and remove excessive wear. However, what ends up being created is multiple points of wear for one arbour due to all the individual bulges acting on one running surface.

Stay tuned for a better approach to repairing a worn bearing šŸ¤“

A few shots from a ā€˜regulator boot’ (regulator key) that was glued on upon arrival, so I made a new one by hand. It’s the first one I’ve ever made and it was a bit of a challenge, but good fun šŸ¤“

A conundrum as old as time…

I’m big on leaving as much on a vintage watch in its current aesthetic condition as much as possible. At most I replace plexis but generally never touch the dial or the case.

I’ve had this Longines for the longest time but keep stopping myself from restoring it when I start thinking about the dial. I’m not sure if it’s a keeper or one pass on to a new custodian.

What are your thoughts? Should I have the dial re-painted or leave it? Let me know the in poll!

There couldn’t be a more perfect book for a watchmakers’ son 😁! Time in terms of mechanics, physics and philosophy is probably the most fascinating subject, and this will be the starting point.

Congratulations again and team on such a beautiful book, can’t wait to be reading it to my little one.

I had the absolute pleasure of working with Andrew Bliss on this floral clock via . I distinctly recall being fascinated by the idea of a clock made of flowers as a kid visiting the zoo - and today I got to service it! Honestly, what a day!

This beautiful machine was made by ā€˜JA.s Ritchie and Son - Edinburgh - 1928’ and gets wound by the staff every day. It has a cuckoo strike system with bellows that cuckoos the hour, every hour, on the hour. The hands are driven via a shaft under the garden, and the floral pattern changes seasonally. It is a beautifully crafted machine that was so well designed and amazingly made.

Thank you for keeping this clock alive! Good team work Jimmy šŸ™Œ

A challenge for the keen eyed watchmakeršŸ•µļøā€ā™‚ļø!!

What’s wrong in the first picture?
The cap stone is upside down Miss Jane!
But why?
A bent balance staff. The last repairer likely couldn’t fix it, which meant there was excessive end shake, which meant they should turn the end stone upside down to reduce end shake.

ā€œElementary my dear Watson!ā€
