Dejavú? About 14 years ago I started ‘playing’ with watches while studying classical guitar at Melbourne Conservatorium. It was my passion away from my passion.

Nowadays I ‘play’ with vintage cameras, servicing them, repairing them, or getting halfway through them and wondering what just happened 😶

Underlying it all I think I just truly love vintage mechanical devices. There was elegance in how they made things back in the day and they were all so repairable.

What you’re looking at: a piece of blue steel mounted in a lathe to be cut down to a total length of 5mm, and the largest diameter at 1.88mm with the smallest at 0.115 - all hand controlled 🫣

Not my usual step by step, but here is a snapshot of some key moments in a balance staff I made! Took me approximately an hour, and hoping to make some more this year to hone that skill a bit more 😃

The logic here is punching multiple holes around the bearing to ‘close’ the hole up and remove excessive wear. However, what ends up being created is multiple points of wear for one arbour due to all the individual bulges acting on one running surface.
