🚗💡 How PPG’s Automotive Refinish Business Is Using AI to Speed Up Innovation

At PPG’s automotive refinish business, we’re focused on bringing body shops solutions that help them work faster and more efficiently — and AI is opening the door to breakthroughs that were once out of reach.

Recently highlighted in industry coverage, we developed a new fast‑drying clearcoat using advanced, chemistry‑based AI tools. Our teams created a deep database of product properties and embedded core chemistry principles into the system, allowing AI to evaluate thousands of potential formulations. Within minutes, the model identified a formulation our scientists hadn’t previously considered — a discovery that cut drying time by more than half once validated through real‑world testing.

Introduced last spring, this clearcoat became PPG’s first AI‑assisted product, and it’s already demonstrating strong performance in shop environments. Years of investment in developing digital twins of our coatings — detailed virtual models of formulas and attributes — have enabled us to test, learn, and refine ideas faster and with greater confidence before moving into the lab.

AI isn’t replacing expertise at PPG — it’s amplifying it. By combining deep formulation knowledge with advanced computational tools, we’re shaping the next generation of coatings designed to help body shops do more in less time.
