“G’day everyone,

On behalf of the Thuringowa RSL Sub-Branch committee and myself, I’d like to wish all of our members, their families, and our wider community a very safe and Merry Christmas.

I’d like to sincerely thank all of our members who have stood with us and supported the Sub-Branch over the past 12 months. Your involvement, mateship, and commitment are what keep this Sub-Branch strong, and we hope you’ve had a good year.

As we head into the Christmas and New Year period, the committee will be taking a short, well-earned break. We look forward to catching up with everyone again in the new year.

And to our veteran community — please remember that you’re never on your own. If you need support at any time, you can reach out to myself on 0498 691 611 or contact us through our social media pages, and we’ll make sure someone gets in touch with you as soon as possible.

Stay safe, look after one another, enjoy the festive season, and we’ll see you in the new year.”

🇦🇺 Community Notice – Urgent Call for Blood Donations 🇦🇺

The Thuringowa RSL Sub-Branch stands with the Bondi community and all those affected by the tragic and senseless attack that occurred yesterday.

Following this devastating event, Red Cross Lifeblood Australia has issued an urgent call for blood donations. Blood supplies are currently low across Australia, with an increased need to support those injured and receiving treatment.

If you are eligible and able to donate, we strongly encourage you to visit your nearest Red Cross Lifeblood centre as soon as possible. A single donation can help save lives and make a real difference during this critical time.

In times of hardship, Australians have always come together to support one another. This is one of those moments.

Please consider donating and sharing this message.
Lest We Forget. ❤️

Our thoughts are with the injured, their families and those who have lost loved ones because of this tragedy.
On Sunday evening Lifeblood issued several life-threatening orders for O negative blood, in the wake of the incident at Bondi Beach.
Please make an appointment for the coming days and weeks if you can https://app.lifeblood.com.au/XW3k/d9wncrn5

On this day — 1 November 1945 🇦🇺

Australia ratified the United Nations Charter, officially becoming a founding member of the UN.

This historic step reflected Australia’s commitment to international peace, security, and cooperation following the devastation of World War II. By joining the UN, Australia helped shape a global framework aimed at preventing future conflicts, promoting human rights, and supporting economic and social development worldwide.

It was a pivotal moment, showing that the sacrifices of Australian service men and women in two world wars were not only about defending our nation, but also about building a safer world for future generations.

🌺 Lest we forget the legacy of service and commitment to peace.

On this day — 31 October 1917 🇦🇺

The Charge at Beersheba is one of the most iconic moments in Australian military history. On this day, the 4th and 12th Light Horse Regiments of the Australian Mounted Division carried out a daring cavalry charge across open desert under enemy fire.

Their objective: capture the Turkish-held town of Beersheba and secure its vital water wells — a key strategic point in the Sinai and Palestine campaign of World War I.

Around 800 Australian horsemen, armed mainly with rifles and bayonets, galloped over 6 kilometres of exposed terrain, facing entrenched defenders and artillery. The combination of speed, surprise, and extraordinary discipline allowed them to overwhelm the enemy and capture the town in a matter of hours.

This action marked one of the last great cavalry charges in history and cemented the reputation of the Australian Light Horse as fearless, innovative, and highly skilled soldiers.

The Charge at Beersheba remains a powerful example of courage, initiative, and mateship — values that continue to define the ANZAC spirit today.

🌺 Lest we forget.

The Slouch Hat — A Symbol of Australian Service and Spirit 🇦🇺

Worn with pride for over a century, the slouch hat is one of Australia’s most recognisable symbols of military service.

First adopted in the late 1800s, the hat’s distinctive design — with one side turned up — was originally practical. It allowed soldiers to carry their rifles at the shoulder without knocking the brim. Over time, it became a mark of identity, courage, and mateship.

During the Boer War, Gallipoli, and throughout both World Wars, the slouch hat travelled wherever Australian troops served. The emblem of the Rising Sun, proudly pinned to the upturned side, represents the strength and unity of the Australian forces.

Today, it continues to be worn by members of the Australian Army, linking every generation of service — past and present.

At the Thuringowa RSL Sub Branch, we honour not just the history of the slouch hat, but the men and women who wore it in defence of our nation.

On this day — 30 October 1918 🇦🇺

Today we remember the signing of the Armistice with Turkey, which brought an end to hostilities in the Middle Eastern theatre of World War I.

For Australian troops, this marked the end of years of hardship in the Sinai and Palestine campaign. Soldiers of the Light Horse, infantry, and supporting units had endured harsh deserts, long marches, and fierce battles, including the legendary Charge at Beersheba just a year earlier.

The Armistice allowed allied forces to secure peace with the Ottoman Empire, effectively ending the war in the region and giving soldiers the chance to return home after years of service.

It’s a day to reflect on courage, endurance, and sacrifice, and to honour the men and women whose service helped shape history.

🌺 Lest we forget.
