This circ 1910 USA Ansonia “Fleming” 8 day striking clock has just had the full work out! Assisted by the workshop Puss 🐱,the clock movement was stripped, cleaned and rust removed and checked for wear. Three quite worn bushings. Polish all pivots, rebush worn pivot holes, reassemble and lubricate. Been ticking away nicely for a week on the test stand so refitted the movement to the case tonight. Looks and sounds beautiful for over 115 years young…😊

This clock movement had been drowned with WD40 in a previous life. After a complete strip, clean, check for wear, reassemble and lubricate, this old girl has a new lease of life! Just synchronised the chime and strike. Will run like this for a week or two then refit to case and will be available to purchase…😊

WD 40 IS NOT A LUBRICANT!!!!

Please do not use WD 40 on your mechanical clocks or watches! Yes it will help dissolve the old gummed up oil and grease causing your clock to stop and your clock may start to work again but with dry pivots and bearing surfaces, you are shredding your clock to bits.

This is my latest clock for overhaul. A nice three train chime and strike. You can see the greasy residue over the movement and it smells of WD 40. The ONLY way to properly service a clock is to fully disassemble, including mainsprings, correctly cleaning all parts and check for wear and reassemble with correct lubricants. Dipping an unassembled movement in a solvent is NEVER a suitable option. There is NO place for WD 40 when overhauling clocks.

Wasn’t aware of this little gem! At the Watch & Clockmakers of Australia national conference and we got to tour the Town Hall building including a tour of the clock tower. Beautiful engineering from the 1880’s. Love one in the lounge room!…🥰😬
