This is my response to the ever-troubling treatment of refugees by Australia, particularly those currently on Manus Island and Nauru.
➖
Immigration and border security are complex issues that require complex solutions, but what is simple to me is how wrong it is (lawfully and morally) to lock up innocent people without proper care, treatment and support, indefinitely. ➖
Most of the people on Manus Island and Nauru are just like us - who have a lot to offer our society - but who have simply fled a desperate situation in order to survive. If the tables ever turn here in Australia and we need a place to go, I can only hope we are not met with the inhumanity that these people were by our government over the last decade-and-a-half.
➖
This piece features two lines from our national anthem that contradict our reactions to refugees over the past 15 years (and longer).
