Primary Rings with chrysoprase, bloodstone, banded agate, tourmalated quartz & star sapphire

The Primary Ring is a celebration of simplicity & gemstones, evoking a feeling of strength in calmness

The feedback we get is that people LOVE wearing these rings - they are a bold statement & receive many compliments!

We try to keep a few in stock, at the moment we have a brand new Chrysophrase (green) which has taken a long time to reappear due to how difficult is was to find the rough material.

If you have a custom gem in mind please let us know, we’d love to make one especially for you:)

Rubies are actually sapphires’ dramatic sibling.

Both are corundum — the only thing that makes a ruby a ruby is chromium, which gives it that fiery red.

I’m using a UV torch to invigorate the chromium - the red in garnet most often comes from iron which doesn’t react to this test

Rubies glow under UV light.
Thanks again to chromium, many rubies literally fluoresce. They can look like they’re glowing from within ✨

They’re seriously tough.
Rubies score 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, making them one of the hardest gemstones — perfect for everyday jewellery.

Rubies symbolise love, courage, and confidence.
They’ve long been associated with passion, vitality, and protection — basically the gemstone equivalent of walking tall.

Also, the perfect stone for valentine’s day! Just sayin’

14ct yellow gold ‘Theatre Lights’ ring with natural pearl & brilliant cut diamond

This special commission was made using the client’s own gold from a very sentimental English fob chain & gemstones from 2 different rings

As you know, I love nothing more than looking at other people’s jewellery! & I’m receiving more and more requests to incorporate a client’s own gold & gemstones in new designs - this is a service I definitely do offer and I thought this is a great time to let you know what this might involve.

It’s not always the cheaper option but it’s always the more sentimental option because it gives you a chance to connect with somebody who may not be here anymore or to be reminded of a loved one every day.

This client had the advantage of extra gold which is needed for this style of cast design. To do this technique you will need an extra 15gms of gold on top of what the ring uses in order to push the metal into the design.

The gold is returned to you as a ‘rod’ (sprue) and you can have that made into another piece or sell it & put the proceeds towards the purchase.

I absolutely love how this evolved!
Please feel free to message me if you’d like to know more about the process:)

I find other people’s jewellery collections VERY EXCITING so I hope you don’t mind this show n‘tell!

Here are some examples of black materials from both my own collection and in store - the pieces I am drawn to at the moment.

Are we in a world-wide mourning period? Maybe.

I’ve also included appropriate & inappropriate jewellery materials starting with:

buffalo horn - appropriate - has an excellently strong structure perfect also for vessels & knife handles.
This is a Victorian era (1850s) snake bracelet symbolising eternal love, commitment, and fidelity

The Mexican designer William Spratling’s fish motif earrings in Ebony and Silver - appropriate - ebony’s an exceptionally hard, dense, and heavy hardwood

LO earrings from the new collection featuring Australian Jade and 18 carat yellow gold - appropriate - the crystal structure of Jade is densely packed & intertwined making it stronger than most other gems (it’s used as a cutting blade in many cultures)

A necklace featuring meteorite and skin polished Australian Sapphire in the shape of a bird - appropriate - meteorite is densely, quite soft but behaves more like a metal than a gem so don’t fracture like quartz or other gemstones, sapphire is perfect.

and then these earring which are not appropriate to sell because the material is way too soft for normal wear! Schist is well known as an industrial material but these have such lovely patterns I couldn’t resist!
I really really love them, especially the flash of ruby that each earring has:)

Let’s talk materials!
I’ve been having a look at materials that have a long history of being used in jewellery especially when it comes to both Victorian and Mexican designs (obsessed with both!)
Their styles incorporate a lot of black materials like rose & persimmon wood, Whitby jet, black onyx, bog oak & volcanite and I had a look around at my collection to see what might be appropriate to use in designs this year.
So here is some of the options:
black Tasmanian coral branch
a 1980s wooden golf club head
Violin/viola chin rests
black opal potch (the colourless portion of a black opal)
Do you have any other suggestions?
What I’m looking for is overlooked materials like piano keys or similar- let me know in the comments!
Stay tuned for what happens next:)

Happy Brooch Monday!

Here’s a sweet little enamelled donkey brooch I picked up recently made by the Mexican jeweller Jeronemo Fuentes.
He was influenced/taught by William Spratling (my great love) in the 1950s and is famous for his enamel brooches that feature mostly animals.
It’s unusual to find these available in Australia but lucky for me it was waiting!
PS donkeys are the BEST! ❤️
Spratling + Fuentes + Donkey + enamel = everything!
